Hi all. I recently picked up a 2005 F350 6.0. I got it cheap with a plugged oil cooler, and went in planning to do studs, gaskets, and all the Ford updates just to have it out of the way. When taking it apart, I quickly noticed that the compressor was damaged. Looks to me like some foreign object(s) entered the turbo, would bounce off the wheel, impact the cover, and repeat.
Engine seemed to run great. Turbo spooled quickly and while I wasn't paying close attention, I'd glance when accelerating and it'd be in the neighborhood of 27 PSI. Engine cranks evenly and starts well, so there's no obvious engine damage. I'll inspect the bores closely with the heads off.
So my main question: Assuming no damage elsewhere, Do I need just a wheel? There is some pitting and high spots on the cover, but could it be carefully worked down with the cover removed? Do I just need to get a wheel and a cover? Or just a whole new turbo? Looking for a budget friendly option to remedy this properly.

Reason: Reduced picture size.
Also, the second plane of blades appear unscathed. Would debris miss those by nature of the wheel's design? Or would that indicate that the foreign object did not get past the first plane?
If you are going that far you might as well split it and clean the ring and vanes. Mine was seized when I bought it and kept throwing a code. I dealt with SP Turboboost Co. LTD from Cali. , they were priced good and the service was great when I rebuilt my 7.3 turbo and they stock everything for the 6.0 and 6.4 . Is there any end play or up and down play when you move the impeller? If there is excessive play then I would go with a complete rebuild kit and be done with it.
Thank you. No end play that I can feel. There is a little radial play, but I'm not sure how much is good and how much isn't. Any opinions on the cover?
If it's really just the silencer ring that's beat up and the housing is fine when you split the turbo, I'd run it. I've seen ONE video of a guy cutting the entire ring out..... let's just say he's the kind of guy who goes home to his sister-cousin-wife every night and brushes his tooth, so not sure I'd go down that road. KC Turbo sells complete turbos with custom machined compressor housings, maybe find him on .org or call him and see what he things about it.
If it were me, I might pull the turbo, clean the exhaust side while you have it apart (look that up on here), swap the intake side wheel, and put it all back together.
If you take it to a Ford dealer, they'll tell you that you need a $4000 turbo replacement. I think you should spend about 3700 less than that and get a wheel, the cleaning kit, and the o-ring kit for reinstalling the turbo.

The play should almost be unnoticeable, just barely enough feel it, no radial play at all so you have some issues inside the turbo. A good kit will run you $300 plus or minus . Money is always an issue but if you can afford it rebuild the whole thing, unison ring included. I replaced everything inside my 7.3 turbo incl. the turbine and shaft . The only thing I had to reuse were the turbo housings themselves. A 6.0 costs more but if you are in that deep you might as well .
