Compressor wheel replacement

Ok,
So After you guys convinced me that the turbo is stock...and I know the bearings and such are still good (no play)....

Is it possible to change out the compressor wheel with out taking the turbo off?

Has any one done it?

This is a subject of some debate. Some say that you cannot remove the compressor cover without taking the turbo off (saying it hits the driver side head). Others say that you can. At least one I have heard say he was able to get the cover off with the old wheel in place, but his new (redesigned) wheel was deeper and he couldn't reinstall the cover without pulling the turbo.

If it were me, I'd probably make sure I had the time and tools to pull the turbo if needed, and then I'd take a crack at it while it's in the truck.

My truck is still down for the tranny rebuild (waiting on the rack to open up) so I have all the time in the world...

I was thinking if I could save the cost of all the orings it would be beneficial.

The more I think about the longer I may wait to do it all... we got about $100 in boots, $200 for the wheel and another $80 for the orings...

If you are putting a wheel on it, rebuild the turbo. You have to pull the turbo to do it properly and to replace the pedestal orings. With little or no experience it takes maybe an hour and an extra 100$ to rebuild it. You then know your turbo is good to go for another 100k or so. If its your first time pulling a turbo on these trucks, you will finish the job and really regret just not rebuilding it while it was out.

I'm a bit confused on your costs for boots and orings.

Orings for the housing and pedestal are no more than 10$ from RiffRaff:Ford - 94-97 'OBS' 7.3L - O-Rings - Turbo & Related - Riffraff Diesel Performance

Your boots are less than $20 bucks for the plenums and $75 if you do the intake boot as well: Ford - 94-97 'OBS' 7.3L - Intakes, Intercoolers & CAC Boots - Intake and CAC Boots - Riffraff Diesel Performance

Maybe I misunderstood your reference to Orings, injector Orings? they are 42$ for 8 injectors. Alliant Injector O-rings - Riffraff Diesel Performance

Cool.

Also, I'm an idiot.... That 42 bucks is for a 6 cylinder 7.3 . My math skills were off today. Should have been 56$.
