So i have a 1977 f250 4x4
my C6 is beat.
For some time ive been thinking about throwing in a 4 speed manuel.
i came across a entire setup for the swap.
My question is that it was bolted to a 302.
My truck now has a 351M.
Will this setup work?
ty
You'll need a different setup as stated above. The 302 has a 10.5" clutch/pressure plate. The 351M has an 11" clutch/pressure plate, the flywheel has 164 teeth, need a 351M/400 bell or one from a 385 series engine.
Clutch fork should be the same as well as the "Z" bar. Find a way to attach the clutch fork return spring....not sure about the driveshaft length or the U joint size for the pinion yoke.
Then there's the hole cutting deal for the trans hump/shifter and pedals.
May even be cheaper in the long run since you have no idea how that 4 speed was used or beaten on as POs usually lie a bit about how they treat stuff, could be more of a hassle down the road...especially if you end up having to rebuild it.
Don't forget about having to add a clutch pedal and linkage....
You would just need to find a bell housing for the 351M, and a clutch linkage system. The pedal bracket will have the holes for the clutch pedal already. Tunnel cover with the correct openings. I did the swap once and i cant remember if the driveshaft lengths had to be changed. If i remember correctly i had to move the transfer case support to different holes in the frame which would indicate that one driveshaft would need lengthened and one cut down.
If you don't mind the automatic just buy a rebuilt kit and do it yourself. They really are simple on the inside. Just Carefully remove everything and lay it out in the order you took the stuff out and then just go in the reverse order when re-installing with new clutch packs and bands.
I swapped a 2wd one to a 4wd output shaft one time and had to take it all a part. No special tools were needed and not nearly as complicated inside as you may think. I am sure there are probably some detailed walkthroughs with pictures on the internet or videos on youtube.
