I put on a new carb this weekend and the idle was really high. I adjusted it down and now it stalls at stop signs or anytime I am slowing down. Could I have adjusted the idle down too far? I am going to mess with it some more when I get home but figured I would get some opinions while at work.
"New" carbs from the gate usually need a bit of tweaking before running right. Presupposing your timing is set correctly.....What carb do you have? Vacuum advance set to ported or manifold vacuum? Auto or manual trans? Have you a vacuum gauge? If so, hook it to manifold vacuum and adjust the mixture screws a little at a time 'till you have the highest reading in inches Hg. That'll be a tad "rich" but very workable. Take your time.
Then set the curb idle to around 600-650 RPMs while in NEUTRAL if a manual trans, about 700-750 RPMs while in DRIVE and parking brake set and someone standing on the brake pedal.
Check for leaky/cracked vacuum lines, too, and the choke for correct work-ableness.
The timing should really be set first before any carb adjustments but I'm guessing(?) your timing is right. Check it again if you get a chance.
For an automatic: Set the idle speed in drive, with the e-brake set, with the stereo, lights, high-beams and a/c on max. Set to 650, or whatever your under hood sticker says. And it's good safety to chock the wheels and have somebody stand on the brake pedal, also
