He didn't really have an answer other than the fact that since I "modified the vehicle outside of the manufacturer specifications" any damage resulting from an accident might not be covered.

Sounds like a load of BS but being as it's part of my company fleet, I don't want headaches in the event something happens.

Insurance companies are always looking for ways to weasel out of paying, this is just another loophole.

Yes you have to remove them for plow mount installs also.

I need to look the front hitch up. I sell draw-tite and as of last week they didn't have anything to offer. I have a bid for 5 F-550s and a bolt on front hitch was one item requested that I could not get pricing on.

That's exactly what they are for. Legally mandated I believe. The Excursion started the law.
