Installed the power resistor in series with the coil. Voltage to ground now reads 6.89 VDC. Truck runs, however the exhaust has become smoky emitting a rhythmic pfft-pfft noise, and the engine idles rough/ wobbles rhythmically.

Should I adjust the distributor before the carburetor?

Best,

Mick

Since you don't have a timing light, you may have to go back and forth. I would adjust the carb first, to see if you can get it to run better. You should be able to adjust it to run it's best at the carb, and then fiddle with the timing. If you find the carb adjustment screw does not have any affect on the idle quality, the carb may be open too much/idle is too fast. In that case you may have to adjust the timing some, to make it run faster so you can turn the idle stop back and close the carb off more.

Sure would be nice to set the timing with a light. I would also get the correct coil, hope you saved the horseshoe connector.

Where are you getting your key-on hot? In other words, what color is the wire that you hooked the resistor to?

Franklin,

I did save the horseshoe connector. The wire i hooked to the resistor is green. I believe it goes to the two-pin connector that goes into the firewall. I should mention that my carburetor does have a hot-air choke but it isn't hooked up due to having not found a suitable brass fitting.

The square coil was meant to use full voltage, so you are testing out a new idea which might not work... meaning a square coil with a ballast resistor.

Here are some wiring diagrams.
