I was testing my onboard air compressor today to see if the drain plug was working. I didn't get that far. The compressor is not getting air to the tank because the fitting highlighted in the photo below is broken.
I didn't take it apart. What is needed to fix this? Is a complete new hose with fittings required? Or, can I take the fitting off and jam the hose into it?
If you can get the nut off clean and clean the hose and square the end, you might be able to just reinsert the hose, provided you can get the old piece to release from the nut. Otherwise you will need a new nut or perhaps change to a compression fitting.
My thought is that fitting may or may not still be good. Normally they lock on the line by simply pushing the line in till it bottoms like the "snake bites" you get at Home Depot for plumbing or the Seatech fittings used in some RVs. If you can push down on the ring at the top of the fitting the line might release the line.
The line here looks to me like it is broken or breaking. if so just stuffing it back in the fitting may not accomplish much. You only real task is finding a way to seal the line to the compressor. On the small compressor I carry on my truck it just uses standard compression fittings and that may also be an option for you.
That fitting SHOULD release by pushing in the plastic ring and pulling the hose out. In a pinch you could trim the end of the line and reinsert it and be okay, but it looks like the line is already too short, you can get repair splices or a duplicate replacement fitting and line at any good big truck shop, to splice in a longer piece of line, the line should exit the fitting in a straight line, no bend to put sideways pressure on it
I pulled the line off of the compressor today and here are the pictures of what I got. I tried to pull the broken fitting apart to see if I could put the line back into it and I think I ended up breaking the fitting.
Is this a standard plumbing fitting I can get at a local hardware store?
That is a standard push-lok fitting for air brakes. You should be able to get it a NAPA or any good parts store that services the trucking industry. We use them for air lines to control valves in LP tanks. Get DOT Rated if you can seems to be of better quality.
If its corroded you may need to replace it. I would flush it with brake clean or wd 40 then try pushing on the collar around the hose while pulling on the hose.
You can get a push-lok splice fitting and just add a short length of tubing to what you have any place that services or sells parts for big trucks should have it.
I drove to three different places today and the best they could come up with was a compression fitting for plumbing. No hose. I tried an O'reilly and two hardware stores.
After more research it looks like I can use the same hose and fittings used on pickup truck air bag systems. A kit of hose and fittings is about $39. I may call around to some 4x4 shops or maybe a diesel truck shop and see if they carry basic parts for air bag systems.
