Cruising down the freeway, when I hit the left turn signal, the torque converter unlocks. Turn the signal off and it reengages. The right turn signal position causes no issues. The hazard switch causes it to unlock also when activated. Removed the turn signal flasher and tried a spare but no fix. Also removed it and test drove with no flasher installed and the symptoms are the same, so its gotta be the switch? I have a feeling there's a short somewhere but how the **** can this happen?? Paging subford and/or Conanski, need your help guys.
The truck is setup to unlock the converter if your hazards or brake lights are activated. There might be an issue with your turn signal switch, or the truck might just be wired that way. I'm not sure.
When you trigger your turn signal, the switch isolates one side of the tail lights for the turn signal from the brake light circuit. The other side is kept with the brake light circuit (the side that isn't flashing). The torque converter unlocks on brake application based on the brake light circuit.
My hypothesis is that the switch is not isolating from the brake light circuit. Check to see if both tail lights are flashing when you use your left turn signal.
sounds like a buggy switch. though it wont hurt anything to run with an unlocked converter when making a turn/merging with traffic.that would get old running on the interstate often though,id suspect.
Hey guys ... The rear right tail light is good but no brake/turn from it. Bad bulb. Will go test drive shortly and get results. Can't believe I missed that ...
Replaced both bulbs just for good measure ... Fixed it. Torque converter remains locked when engaged while using the turn signals. And I was about to yank the wheel to replace that turn signal switch ... Thanks guys.
How can you tell that the torque converter locks and unlocks? And, it appears I need to adjust my brake light switch. It works, but will turn off if only lightly pressing the brake pedal.
When the problem was present (switch on) I would go to accelerate and the RPMs would flare to 2,000 RPM while I accelerated (not a downshift). On these trucks if the torque converter is locked, speed and RPM rise together with no flares. Not a great explanation but it drives significantly different without torque converter operation vs. when it's working right.
Burnt rear bulb. I had the exact same thing. Signal left for a lane change or passing maneuver and the TC unlocked...for awhile I thought it was me pushing the accelerator pedal as it did not do it when signaling right to re-enter the right lane. Eventually realized it was the left turn signal only issue.
Also...I ALWAYS replace bulbs in pairs. Headlight burns out? Both get replaced. I remove one rear brake light assembly? All of the bulbs are getting replaced on both sides.
