Is it possible that the engine oil temp can cause smokey starts? I've done everything to get this beast from smoking once it starts cooling off outside. At 50* it will chug smoke. I did notice that even tho it was 100* outside that my gp's were still coming on and staying on for a while, is that normal.
In the past 2 years I have put 2 full sets of glowplugs, SD VC gaskets and wiring, 2 gpr's and stage 1 injectors (did the second set of gps shortly after). I'm goin to run through checking voltage and ohms again this weekend but any advice would be sweet.
Its normal for the glow plugs to run all the time when the engine is cold, even if its warm outside. You did all that work so I don't know what the smoke is all about.
I just got moved into my new house and plan on hooking it up to AE this weekend. If the eot was bad would it throw a cel?
Yes I have checked volts to the VC plug and when I had the VC's off I checked it all the way to the GP connector. Motorcraft plugs.
depending on PCM, at 150* F the GPs should not turn on during start
When 50 out if I let the GP stay on until WTS goes out, it takes a bit to crank over
waiting 10 seconds after WTS goes out, then it fires right up with a lot less smoke
at 70, I just turn the key and it starts right up with a lil bit of white smoke and I know I have a worn injector as it runs rough for a minute and smooths out.
might want to check armature clearance if you have many miles on it
Having owner 3-7.3's, 1-OBS, 1-E99, and 1-02, it is my experience that they all smoke a little at start up when cool outside. Below 50 will smoke a little for a minute. Below 40 will smoke more. 30 and below and I can cover my neighbors house if I let one sit there and idle and the wind is moving in the right direction! (he hates me anyway)
My truck never smoked. Until after I installed stage 1 single shots. I have talked to Jody, but before I go messing with the tuning I want to cover all my bases and make sure I didn't miss anything.
Things to check:
Gp relay- GP's (ohms & volts)
Check EOT with AE
Possibly pull VC's and check injectors for proper seating and torque.
Anything else I should check or investigate?
Hey splatts.... You might just be very much more aware of your smoking than most because of the hood stack. For those of us with normal exhausts, it would be a lot less likely to notice smoke unless we are looking for it or it is excessive.... That's just my thought anyway

EOT when cold shouldn't matter. but it shouldn't go more than 20* above coolant.
Not letting us know your mods makes things more difficult.

What GPs are you using?
Mine are motor craft and don't seem to heat up fast so I have to wait 10 seconds longer than what WTS says and it starts right up. my tractor hardly ever need more than 10 seconds.
Diesels smoke from unburnt fuel. You upgraded injectors can put more fuel in and can cause more smoking on start up depending on tuner parameters.
you will see more smoke with stacks too, long exhaust will condense in the pipe a bit before you notice
It was about 50* the other morning and let the Gp's go for a good 45 sec to a minute. Don't mind the peanut gallery in the back. LOL

I'm right there with ya Splatts! My truck smokes the same as yours. I thought my main problem was injector orings since I was getting oil in the fuel. The new injectors have helped some but not cured it. For me it has to be something with the starting system because if the block heater is plugged in, it will start right up with little to no smoke. Have you tried plugging it in yet?
