So I got a canopy for my truck and it is red. My truck is white. Paint code 9m, don't remember the name. It's kind of an off white. I would like to paint my new to me canopy the same color. I know the auto parts stores carry the duplicolor perfect match, I think they are 8 oz aerosol cans. How many would I need to paint a canopy? Is it worth it? Is there a better way? I don't have the money to have a paint shop do it.
Thanks,
Drew
The can says how many square feet it covers. You can estimate how much you need by thinking of the canopy as 5 rectangles, and add their areas up. Going from red to white is going to need a lot of coats. I'd suggest 2 coats of primer and at least 2 coats of white. Don't forget to scuff the surface up and clean it well before painting. Also use a gray primer.

Thanks I didn't think about the square footage being on the can haha
If the cap is single stage(not clear coat) you will want to use primer sealer FIRST or the red will just bleed thru the white.
Do yourself a favor and buy a Harbor freight $20 HVLP gun and a quart of primer sealer and a quart of the white.
it will cheaper in the long run, it will turn out 10x better and you will have a spray gun for your next project

+1 on this. Something as big as a cap is just too much to rattlecan properly. You can get the paint and sealer at an automotive paint shop.

The cap does have clear coat on it that is peeling off. Are there any extra steps that have to be made?
Just thinking about bedlining the thing now. I think it will hide all the imperfections a little better, and easier touch up.
You should sand it smooth no matter what you put on it. Peeling paint will continue to peel even under bed liner. Eventually your bed liner, or whatever topcoat you use will peel off in big sheets.
If you do get the spray gun get a good air filter setup that removes water and oil. You can go cheap on the gun, but quality counts with the filter.

Yes, any loose clear needs to come off(should sand all off)
Then prime, and paint.
PLEASE, do NOT bed line it. It looks like crap, collects dirt, and would make it IMPOSSIBLE to ever paint it
