I did a crown vic front swap a few months back and in the spring I plan to lower the rear. I have an Explorer 8.8 with 3.73 Trac lock. I planned to c Notch the frame and put the axle over the leaf springs, but now I'm considering a 4 link coil over set up. Again I don't plan on doing anything to the truck till spring since I don't have a garage to work in over the winter. I just want to start gathering parts and information early. I see some places sell kits for f100s but none of them are for 1974 trucks. Also I'm not sure how you get the correct ride height with the kit. Here's an example kit I'm talking about. https://m.summitracing.com/parts/hdt-rb-121
I went to the Heidt site and did a search and found that they offer nothing for Ford trucks newer that 1972.
There are universal kits like this one from Competition Engineering that would probably require adaptation.
Here's a 2010 FTE discussion that has some interesting stuff in it. I'd urge doing an advanced search on posts (not threads) here in the 73-79 forum.
Are you planning to remove the bed for this work?
Yes I'm going to remove the bed, i want to paint the underside of it and the frame anyway. I found the same thing nothing for newer than 72, I suppose I could use a universal kit or the kit for the older trucks and make it work, but I'm curious if anyone else has done it. I'm also not sure how to get the right ride height. Maybe just buy the coilovers after everything is mocked up to the right height?
I was going to buy a flip kit but I want to get a good price comparison and find out performance differences between the two, like now much better is the ride etc. I looked into irs kits but at about 8000 there's no chance that's happening haha. I know it's expensive and I'll spend thousands and thousands on my truck, it just sucks to spend so much at once in a lump some rather than a little here and there.
I measured where the leaf springs would sit on the rear, they are defiantly close to the edge but not horrible, idk, but I figured I'd make up the width with new rims with proper backspacing. Why do you ask?
