Some early '11s had some valve issues, and there were the turbo's with ceramic bearings. Proceed with caution. If you can find out if it has had upgrades, it is probably ok. Others with more info than I can give you may chime in here also.
Good luck.
I just traded in a one owner September 2010 built 2011 6.7 with 100,000 miles on it and basically zero issues with the engine. There have been a very very low percentage of those built before (I think the date is February 29, 2011) that have lost the number eight valve which destroys the engine. I had a water pump replaced under warranty and a radiator replaced or warranty ,but nothing else. The rest of the truck was also bulletproof with no problems. If you could get to oasis report on the truck it probably be a good idea.
It would be a situation of truly "rollin' the dice" on an '11. Not to say there are hundreds of thousands on the road doing just fine or that any of the '12s and up can't come apart too, we are just saying why chance it. The '12s aren't going to be that much more expensive, for that matter a '13 either, once the '17s are on the road a few more days.
I'd tend to agree with looking for a 12 and up. I have heard some horror stories with the 11's. Good trucks though. I've had my 12 for about a year and am happy with it.
