Question 2.8L Rebuild

I am currently rebuilding a 2.8L V6 from an 85 Bronco II. The engine leaked and burned a lot of oil so everything is coated in a thick layer of oil. Right now it is completly disassmbled so I was just wondering what would be a good cleaner I could get that doesnt cost a lot. A friend of my brothers said that I should use paint thinner but I dont know if he was serious or not. I was just wondering if somebody could help me with this. It would be much appreciated.

I've seen paint thinner used and like gasoline, you still have a fire hazard. Years ago, we used drycleaning fluid in the Navy for cleaning diesel engine blocks, but that stuff would eat your skin off pretty quick if it got on you.

I've sent mine out for cleaning for years now. That way it all gets cleaned, not just the parts you can reach.

Don't use gas, unless your workshop is 100 ft. from your house and you have nothing in there of value.

I use "Oil Eater" from Costco. Costs about $10 per gallon, is non-toxic and biodegradable. I would still wear gloves.

It cuts through old grease quickly and washes up with water.
