I have an oil leak that I cannot pinpoint the original of. The oil collects on the bottom of the transmission housing and drips from there. The leak seems to have coincided with my discovery of a hole in the housing. Im pretty sure the hole wasn't there 2 months ago when I got the truck so am not sure what caused it. I've since patched the hole (please don't judge the patch) but still have a leak. The amount of oil in the picture you see with the patch is after one day of not driving the truck plus at least one more drop on the ground. Any ideas or experience in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
You can see the oil droplets form right on the patch.
I was afraid of that. It seems to me it's probably the rear main but I hate to admit that and would love it to be something simple. That's definitely not a home repair for me. If it is the rear main or front transmission seal could that lead to other immediate problems if I don't have it fixed right away other than having to add oil sporadically?
Engine oil from the rear main will be blackish/greyish. Transmission oil should be reddish unless it is overheated. Check the transmission dipstick to be sure.
I live with some of both types of leak. The rear main is not that unusual and, in my experience anyhow, not of great concern as long as oil level is monitored. The leak rate should not increase very fast. A transmission is a bit more concerning as leak rate may increase faster. Again, just watch the oil level.
The one thing I really don't like is a big rear main leak with a manual transmission. The clutch can get oiled in that situation which is no fun.
Yeah it's not transmission fluid. I know that's still dark red (looks new) I saw enough of it and got enough on the driveway and on me working on the on the transmission changing all the cooling lines and fittings because the fittings were leaking. The leak is definitely not anywhere near the color of transmission fluid its blackish in color. I guess that means new rear main for me sooner than later.

The hole in the bell housing looks like it chucked a bolt thru it. Might want to make sure that all of the bolts that should be inside of the bell housing are still there.
Is it motor oil or trans oil? They look and smell different.
