1978 F150. truck has a fresh built 545. only about 500 miles on it. getting a pretty good oil leak. the pic with the pool of oil on cardboard is after 30 mins of sitting after driving. the other 2 pics are about as near as I can tell to where the leak is coming from. any ideas? thanks
oil collecting before dripping down on cardboard
after 30 mins os sitting after a short drive
you can see where the oil seems to be coming from before collecting and dripping down on cardboard
I'd crawl on top of the block with a flashlight and mirror and work down. Gravity will show you the high point of your leak. Inspect the sides of the block also. The good news is that there is a LOT of room in our engine compartments and only a couple of things could leak that badly down to the transmission dust shield - including the rear main seal.
well its needs a new transmission anyway, and I have one its way. I guess thats a good time to replace the rear main seal, if in fact that's where the leak is coming from.
Who did the "fresh rebuild" on the 545? I would think that with all that work and $, you would get a new rear main seal and it would last more than 500 miles.
If you took it to a pro shop I would ask them if they put a new one in. And what was the mileage that your warranty was on items like seals. Never hurts to ask.
