Any of you that have an auxiliary fuel tank and use the gravity kit by RDS... does the 2017 model throw a code if you leave the cutoff valve from the tank turned on all the time? I just got mine installed and will know myself in a few days but just wondered if I needed to be turning the valve off after it fills up for a while or for convenience I could just leave it on all the time like on my 2012 F250 without it causing the computer to go bonkers. It worked fine on that truck that had the digital miles to E but a regular fuel gauge. Every once in a while my miles to E display would just recalculate and show an increased number of miles. The only trouble with this is that occasionally the factory tank would leak a small amount of fuel out of the top vent from it staying full all of the time and would make a greasy mess of the frame when dirt stuck to it. Since the 2017's no longer show the gallons used I figure it may work fine with the valve on all of the time. Wouldn't be hard to shut the valve off every time, just wondered if anyone had any experience on the new model to know how the truck responds.
I am not an expert in this area by any means, but I was told that gravity feed tanks will not work with the Super Duty. Ford changed to a closed fuel system in 2015 and since then gravity feed tanks will not work. Titan makes a tank with a pump that will work. RDS may also just never checked.
Transfer flow also makes a pump system. They cost more but for me it will be worth it. I currently have a 50 gal transfer Flow tank on my 2004 F250 and it works great. Never had a problem with it except to change out an O-ring on top of the tank where it has a closed vent.
My RDS with gravity feed does not throw any codes and the valve remains open.... the computer does try to show usage but will recycle and got back to max miles to empty..
Thanks….I have had no issues with the RDS gravity feed not working fine on this Super Duty just like previous models so I dont know anything about the closed fuel system. It is definitely more cumbersome to install than previous models because you dont have much room and you have to remove and cut out roughly 3-4" of your 1.5" filler neck which is all metal now rather than rubber in order to replace it with the aluminum adapter that has the overflow check valve in it. Ive currently just been turning the tank valve on at night and letting it fill and then turning it off the next morning. It always seems to fill up fine without overflowing or problems. I was just wondering about the computer but invstr55 answered my question. Might try an electric pump in the future but have been satisfied with the RDS gravity feed kit since around 2005 and have had it on several trucks. Thanks everyone
