I have a 1980 f600 5 speed manual trans and a 2 speed differential. what oil should be used in them? does the 2 speed differential require something special? Does it have clutch plates in it or is it just a mechanical engagement?
does the transmission take gear oil or something else? I read that you should not use gl5 gear oil in a trans and should instead use diesel engine oil in the trans is that correct?
I was able to find this after looking up eaton. http://www.eaton.com/ecm/idcplg?IdcS...ILE&dID=270938
Looks like they do have an internal clutch. It does say to use gear oil and not to use friction modifiers. I don't know if it has any brass parts on the inside so do not know if gl5 is ok to use or not.
All the Eaton stuff is PDF, which makes posting a link hard to do. It sounds like you found one, where they give lube specs as mil spec numbers. Like so:
In case anyone sees this and wanted to know. The diff held about 3.5 gallons and the transmission about a gallon.
New problem the differential stopped shifting(before I changed fluid). I found the firewall pass though connector was all corroded up inside.
I fixed the bad connector at the firewall removed and soldered the wires. Still not working. I think I think it may be the circuit breaker can anyone tell me where it is? I am getting power but I think it is to week under load to move the motor. I know the motor is good it will shift if I jumper it at the wire connector under the hood.
Check all your wiring with Ohm meter for any resistance, also check the 2 spd switch on the shifter tower. Hope this helps as had many come into the shop for no high range back in the ol' days.
If I remember correctly that switch changes the polarity of the wires when it is shifted. That causes the electric motor in front of the 2 spd diff to run in the opposite direction to the end of it's travel and the points open. Ohm meter won't tell you if it will carry a load. Use a big head light bulb for a test light that carries load. Check the power and ground at the diff and back up from there if bad. If that works pull the cover off to check and clean the points. Thank they went electronic and you have to buy the whole shibang if it's bad $300?
