I'm replacing all my bushings up front and I'm having a problem removing the old pivot bushing. The rubber bushing is stuck and the original steel sleeve doesn't want to come out. It actually looks similar to the pic below, which is from the 'replacing king pins and radius arm bushing' sticky. I wasn't planning to pull everything down. Any tips or tricks? Special tools?
IF you were going to install polyurethane, you would leave the thin metal shells in.
Since you have rubber replacements, and if you're going to use them, then you'll need to get the shells out.
Slit the shell with a hacksaw --being careful not to gouge the blade into the beam itself and then fold the shell in on itself with a chisel (or whatever) and pop it out like this.
The majority of the rubber needs to be removed from it. Otherwise, the rubber will keep the shell sprung outward, making it hold tight to the I-beam bore.
Nicks or sharp lines in cast or forged materials just becomes stress risers in them that you don't want. If you take your time and are careful, everything else will take care of itself.
