I was replacing my spark plugs and one screw holding the ignition coil stripped while another snapped. I have change 3 plugs (the easy one) and could have more problems. I spent half a day trying to drill the screws out to no avail and also noticed the intake manifold is plastic. I was thinking of swapping it out. This would alleviate the broken screw problem and make pulling the plugs easier. It also looks like it's just 8 bolts. Would swapping a new intake manifold in add any performance gains? Is there a manifold others recommend?
I replaced mine with the Dorman unit, for the same reason. I had four coil mounts broken. The replacement is a good quality part and comes with everything needed to install it. It is a labor intensive job that I happily paid the $500 to have a shop perform. I didn't notice any performance gain from it.
Thanks, that is what I was looking for. I was looking at the dorman intake also, I think it's around $165, you found it to be good quality? NAPA near me has a plastic one and wants nearly $300 for it. I assuming you also replaced the gasket? anything else? I was going to do the thermostat, plugs, plug boots, and iac valve. I also plan on putting in a high output alternator, so was thinking I should do that too. from looking online it looks like it's about 8 bolts that hold on the intake but you have to remove a lot of tubes/wires/brackets to get to it. As well as the alternator.
My plugs were freshly changed, at the time. I replaced all the coils with Motorcraft parts, as well as the manifold. The manifold comes with the o-rings that seal it, as well as all other gaskets and o-rings and a new thermostat. It's a very complete kit. My understanding is that it's a 6-9 hour job. I didn't have that kind of time available, so I turned mine over to a shop.
Yes, the Dorman intake is plastic as well. It's a good, very complete kit. If you need to change your spark plugs, this a great time to do it. Also, if your valve covers are leaking, great time to change those as well.
Ok when you say valve covers, u mean the gaskets right?
I can answer that for him and say, Yes, the gaskets. They leak frequently, especially in higher mileage engines. Since you are doing the plugs it is not much more labor to do those as well. Mine were leaking a bit in my 01 5.4L at 180k miles when I did them.
