Grease

Do you all grease your tongue jacks and hitch. Ball if so what do you use?

Yeah I don't want this to turn into an oil thread. I was thinking the same thing. Just didn't know if you used grease or something special

I use Amsoil's 5'th wheel / chain lube on the ball, hitch, and mount points for the sway bar. After it dries, it is more like a wax. Stuff sprays on.

Greases do the job, but can also trap particles (and keep them there) which is why some go 'naked'.

Have not greased / lubed the jack as I do not recall seeing manufacturer instructions to do it.

One thing I have learned about the jacks is to *not* run them to full extension / retraction. Wondered why I went through several of them until I read about the hard-stop thing and have not replaced one since.

I greased the shaft on the tongue jack as well as the gears inside. Then I replaced it with an electric tongue jack. I spray the trailer stabilizer jacks with WD40 prior to using them. It doesn't last long but long enough for that use.

I put some bearing grease on the ball of my hitch. I then bought a ball cover so that I don't get the grease all over myself and everything it comes into contact with. I use a cut tennis ball on one of my ball mounts. I use the bought cover on my WDH. Oh, I also grease the snot out of the underside of the coupler, the thing the ball goes into. I had problems disconnecting and the grease helps reduce that problem.

I use some kind of lube sold by Reese as ball and hitch lube. It comes in a squeeze tube and is a pale blue in color - until it gets dirty anyway.
I don't use it because I don't think anything else will work, but because it comes in a small clean closeable tube that goes under the back seat of my truck, where it is convenient to use.

I have an old metal can of Mobil branded red grease. It's olderr than the current API classifications, so I don't use it on wheel bearings or anything, even though I think it was pretty top notch back in the day. I use that for everything where a smear of grease is needed.

My kids, and my relatives kids, ALWAYS manage to get hitch grease on them. All the women folk hate it. I usually throw a shopping bag over it when I'm parked now, saves on the headaches . . .

Those are the secondary reasons why I use the spray-on waxy stuff for the ball and hitch components. Once 'dry', the stuff tends to stay on the hitch and not on the clothes

I've had success with the spray-on wire rope type lube and the reese hitch grease in the small tube. I just wipe my components clean every so often (when they look gross) and re-apply.

I use white lithium from the tube. Found a 2 pack at Tractor Supply. Will literally last me a really long time. I didn't start greasing until about 2 years ago. Previously I just went dry. I just use a squirt of grease and that's it. Maybe reapply 2-3 times a year.

BTW, cut tennis ball is perfect for the ball with grease on it. I also wear leather gloves setting everything up to keep most of the grease off my hands.

The tennis ball trick is a great idea, I may have to adopt that one myself!!
