Question for those who pull bumper-pull trailers...
What do you use to lubricate your {(*HITCH*)} ball? Knowing all you-all as I do, please note the emphasis on {(*HITCH*)}. I've heard that placing a layer or two of wax paper between it and the trailer coupler does the trick without making a mess.
Napa has a ceramic high heat lube for brake pins etc. that I think would work great in that application. Heavy body blue colored so you know exactly how much is applied. I use it for the articulating bushings on my 5th wheel hitch.
I have always used wheel bearing grease as stated above. I grease both the Coupler in the ball. I also keep the ball cover on when I'm not towing anything.
I do the same as Cascade250. Grease is critical to my trailer's ability to unhitch from my truck without having to use a crowbar. I slather on so much that I also use a cover to keep in on the ball and off my hands, clothes, etc.
get yourself a can of white lithium grease. I give a little squirt up the coupler every time and leave the can in the trailer. its not messy if you don't over do it.
Wheel bearing grease works best for me. I tried white lithium and it turned into a black, dry cake. WD-40 is not much of a lubricant. I also oil the latch parts.
WD-40 into the trailer side as needed. My goal is to keep it clean and free of debris. Grease tends to attract dirt and gunk for me.
I did this for a while. The WD40 ended up leaching from the hitch to the ball and down into the ball threads. I got home from a trip with our then 36' TT behind. When I unhooked, I realized that the only thing holding the ball to the hitch head was the last couple threads and the cotter pin that prevented the nut from coming completely off. I still get a pit in my stomach thinking about what almost happened...

I use wheel bearing grease on the ball, the portion of the load leveler tension bars that fit into the hitch, and the two mount points of the sway limiter. When I get set up at my camp site, I remove the hitch from the truck and mount it and lock it in the trailer ball receiver. This keeps the ball clean while wandering dusty roads. Dust and sand in grease is a very good abrasive. Before the first spring trip I clean all lubricated surfaces of old grease and start again.
