302 question

I've got a 1985 5.0l block in my 1954 ford truck and while removing the engine for some repairs I noticed at both top sides of the head where the heads meet the intake manifold there is about a 3/8 gap and in the gap there is a portion of an open quarter moon shaped hole [center block both sides] at the edge of the head. It has oil in the hole. Whats up with that? The original engine which had a two barrel manifold was replaced when i installed a rebuilt motor and installed a Edelbrock Performer manifold and a 600 series carb. One other thing is that the rebuilt motor was a long block which came with the heads. Ok I missed seeing that when I put the performer on, my bad but does anyone know why there is a hole up there in the first place?

Bill

Can you post a pic of what you're talking about I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're referring to. I do think it's likely an inconsequential void or shape in the casting that is usually ignored but who knows.

I purchased a remanufactured long block that also came with one head having the hole the OP speaks of. Bump to hear the results, if there are any, for this thread.
