Single clutch is $249. Triple clutch is $299 in stock stall speed.

Do I have to stand it on end? I was hoping just to pull it back and down to get the flexplate off and replace the TC.

Triple clutch stock stall converter being ordered tomorrow.

You might be able to get the converter to seat without standing it on end. It's much easier to get it seated properly with the trans on end.

One well experienced member here has highly recommended Ford OEM flexplate only...unless you enjoy doing that job again.

My e99 truck has 118k on it and the TC has rattled since new. I have pulled a 17k trailer with it the last few years and so far have had no issues. I am planning on doing a John Woods rebuild here before long but that is just for piece of mind.

Mark, is the spline issue something that will eventually cause a failure or does it just cause the noise? I thought I remember reading that Ford didn't issue an all out recall but would replace the TC if you complained about it at the time.

They didn't issue a recall because the issue was neither a safety problem, nor an emissions problem. That is the only two ways a recall can be issued according to Federal Law.

They did a Customer Satisfaction program, which is like a recall, except that they can let those expire. Recalls never expire.

The biggest problem is that as the splines wear you get steel particles throughout the trans. If the magnet gets them they don't cause a problem. If they get into the valves you can get all sorts of problems.

If you set the rear on jack stands you can drop the trans down and back. It is possible to change without standing on end, just be ready. Darn things are HEAVY when you are on your side, recommend two people

Triple Clutch Converter came today. I don't have a problem pulling trans out from underneath. It just wasn't my original plan. Taking advice I get on here. Where is the recommended place to seperate transfer case linkage? Disconnected shifter but need to seperate linkage to remove transfer case.

Got trans out. No cracks that I can see in flexplate. Some chipped teeth. Notice flexplate says E4OD. Truck is a 3/99 build date. Old converter clicks when I spin it back and forth.

Strained fluid when I drained converter and pan. Not pieces of metal or really any sludge.

So I finished this up yesterday. All said took me about 5 hours working with my 14 year old son. We did lift the rear of the truck and snuck it out that way. Stood it up and got the converter to set in with the clunks and with a straightedge was 1/8-1/4" below face of bellhousing. First picture shows we used a piece of plywood with cardboard wedged in so that it wouldn't move.

We strained every bit of fluid that came out of it and never saw any metal. Old TC definitely was rattling even when I shook it in my hands. New on was quiet.

Before replacing trans I did a good inspection of the downpipes, RMS etc. Torqued new flexplate on and trans went back in. Started it up and it is so quiet. Sounds just like my 7.3 6 speed. I have put in 16 quarts of fluid. Went with a universal synthetic as recommended by a local transmission builder. May need another 1/2 quart. But will run it a bit more. It shift fine and locked up as it should. Time will tell but happy at this point.

Flexplate torqueconverter

Do you have links to the Torque Converter and Flexplate you replaced them with? I just bought a 1999 (Build date December 1998) F-350 7.3L Powerstroke at auction from a local utility company with 48,000 miles on it. It's mimicking your described rattling problem exactly. Which i'm sure is why they sold it. Engine seems perfectly fine. My plan of action is to try and replace both the Torque Converter and flexplate and hope to heck I bought a good truck. Thanks.

Don't hold your breath waiting for flipper612 to answer. He hasn't posted at all since this thread, which is almost three years old.

And no, I don't have any part numbers. I just ask for the parts I need for the vehicle I have.

Yeah. I've gotten different answers from everyone from online retailers, to Napa, To Ford itself. I guess I'll just have to have the truck out of service a little longer and just pull the old ones out so I know what i'm looking at... I'm usually a chevy guy but the 7.3 lives in legend and it was going for a good price so I snapped it up... Hoping this is the only issue.
