Theft Deterrence for Dents

Reading the article entitled "3 Best Ways to Protect Your Ford Truck" at the top level of this site and following the forum link at the end of it caused me to wonder whether and how dent owners approach this challenge. Although newer Super Duty trucks are being targeted by pro thieves, a nice dent could also be tempting.
Although that discussion leaned toward sophisticated electronic interrupts and kill switches, I'd imagine that dent owners have their own unique solutions. For example, how does one defend against thieves with trailers, winches and buckets of soapy water.

Hi flowney -
couple things that I know work:
1) Pull the FUSE that controls the EFI. Take it with you. Keep a spare hidden. Vehicle won't run.
2) Old enough to remember oldfashioned telephone switchboards?
I cut wire in the ignition, wired it to the receiving "hole" for a switchboard plug.
The plugs are about size of a 30-30 round, carried it with me , had a few extras.
Inserting it into the receiving hole (hidden) connected the circuit, then key would start the truck. How many thieves carry phone switchboard plugs?

I just trust no one wants my piece of junk! The vanity mirror is coming off the sun screen so I keep my key in the space between them lol.

The Club is always a good highly visible deterrent that most amateur hacks wont even mess with.

A friend had one in his '73 Bronco when a couple of lowlife's tried to steal it. They crow barred the door open, hammered a screwdriver into the ignition and even tried cutting the club with a hacksaw (they left the saw on the floor). Yes, professionals can get around it, but it's a good deterrent that's pretty visible. After seeing how hard they tried to steal his Bronco, I bought a Club the next day. It is ugly tho... A kill switch is always good too.

I wish nobody wanted mine, then I wouldn't have to worry about it as much, lol. Actually, I just wish it fit in the garage!!! I get offer letters on the windshield at least once a month, I'm just praying nobody tries to steal it.

Depending on the vehicle, I'll remove the rotor (ignition), remove the fuel pump fuse, or remove the battery entirely.

This works pretty well if you ignore the pink collar

Nothing will stop a professional if they really want your truck. The best we can do is make their job a bit harder, and hopefully stop the unsophisticated thieves.

I have an alarm which will help during the night since I will be there to hear it. It has remote ignition disconnect triggered by the alarm.

I also installed a remote hood release to make it a bit harder to get into the engine compartment.

Away from home is more problematic. I will probably install a hidden kill switch as secondary protection. I like the switchboard plug idea.

If I were really worried I might install a hidden vehicle tracker + methods mentioned above.

While my truck is presentable it is not terribly valuable. I just watch where I leave it and don't worry too much.

I take my steering wheel off. I also rarely go far from my truck.

Store in a locked garage. Use a locking hood, locking glove box, locking gas caps, 90s door lock ***** (not easily unlocked with a wire) and an alarm system. All that paired with common sense helps.

I leave the windows OPEN and the keys in the ignition in some pretty crappy neighborhoods. On purpose.

Most scum cant drive stick. Those that do are confused by the transfer case being in neutral......and scared ****less of a lifted truck on '33's with no exhaust.

Helps to have lot of dead animal blood and parts all over your truck, "IDGAF" dents, primer and truly offensive bumper stickers that state to the truly low class thieves: " A CRAZY VETERAN WITH MORE WEAPONS AND VIOLENCE THAN COMMON SENSE IS BEGGING YOU TO TRY TO STEAL THIS TRUCK"

It works.

Where do y'all live that you guys are worried about having em stolen? Here in Montana, there's tons of old trucks that are in way better shape than mine that are practically abandoned in people's yards...I just don't worry about it!

I don't do much, when it did run the key stayed in the ignition. I live on a private road that my corolla scrapes the undercarriage if I don't drive on the right path. Lowered fart pipe Hondas cant make it up the driveway.
The old place I lived I either wore my ACU's to work every day when I had an active national guard job, or something persuasive on my hip. My dog is aggressive to strangers also (read he will mess you up). People either avoided me or knew me. I'm a really nice guy but the hill billy truck, the ratted out Harley and guns kept most people from talking to me.
Right now its borderline impossible to steal my truck unless you have a tow truck. When it runs I will keep the doors locked and I am thinking about installing a type of kill switch somewhere. But its a stick and most people cant drive stick these days.
