Oil burning on 2016 5L

I though I should share my experience with my 2016 5.0 F150 with other owners. In the first 3,000 miles, it burned two quarts of oil. At around the 3,000 mile mark, I went through the Algonquin NP, heavily loaded. For those who haven't been there, it is extremely hilly (even "mountainous" by midwestern standards). Apparently it just needed to be worked harder to get those rings to seat properly, because it has only burned about .25 quart in the 2500 miles since then. So if yours is burning some oil, don't panic yet. Just drive it hard for a while, or hook on a trailer and find some mountains.

Interesting. Mine wasn't burning oil, but a 2000 mile stint with a 5000 lb trailer appears to have reduced its appetite for gasoline.

I burned my first quart between 3000-4000 miles so I went ahead and got the oil changed (usually do it around 5k). I'm half way on the 2nd oil change and am OK so far.

A new truck shouldn't be using oil. Boy Ford quality is sure going down if you have new trucks burning oil.

if you lost 2 quarts in 3000 miles on a new truck you need a new engine

That's just not true at all. Some engines just take a while for the rings to seat. It has nothing to do with the build quality. It is just a fact of life when building or rebuilding engines. Some rings break in and seal within a few miles, others take a while longer.

It isn normal for any new engine to use some oil. I haven't noticed any on mine. Has been spot on full for 9000 km. I did do an early change. And drove it hard to break it in. As well as towing a trailer after having 1600 kms on it. Pulling up long grades with some good weight behind you will make sure the rings seat. If you don't have access to that then sport mode works great!

As I said, it has only used 1/4 of a quart in the 2500 miles since then. That is an acceptable level of consumption (for an engine using relatively thin oil), not "time for a new engine". Go to any Ford dealer and ask them to warranty an engine that uses .25 quart every 2500 miles. Good luck with that.

The most likely explanation is simply that it need to be worked harder to get the rings to break in properly. Hopefully it won't be an issue again, but if it is, I will update this thread.

.25 is a lot different than 2 quarts for 3K miles.

Yes it is, and that was also in the original post that you replied to, when you said that the engine needed to be replaced.

Learned the lesson to not baby a new engine years ago. Bought a new Mercury Cougar in 1989 with the V6. Drove it easy after it was purchased and the oil burn was horrendous. About a quart every 1500 miles. Took it to the dealer and they said to floor the gas pedal to accelerate to speed about every other stoplight the rest of the day. Oil burn stopped. From then on never had to add oil between changes. Moral to the story is to never baby a new engine.
