How long does it take you guys to fire up the engine? Just got mine running today and I'm new to 6.0. It took about 4 seconds the first time, and considering this was a used engine I figured that was very fast to fire up. However, subsequent starts which I had expected to be less cranking are also taking about 3-4 seconds. I haven't had any experience with an oil actuated injection so maybe this is typical for the design?
I think most of the forum would tell you that is just fine. Some here have an engine that turns over once and fires and some crank 5 seconds or more, just depends on the beast.
The sons truck pops off in two seconds cold, slightly longer hot, and sometimes will just kind of lope up to a start once hot, kind of the "well I guess I had better fire up now" start. I think it's more of an early build thing with the old style pump. Sometimes hot it starts as quick as it does cold, really no rhyme or reason to it.
Thx. Very excited to have this running today. I was so eager to drive it I headed out with only 3 shocks on it lol. You can really tell the difference between a new billstien on one side and and empty space where a shock belongs on the other.
I have a late build 2004 with 310,000 miles and it cranks within 2 seconds, Also when I got the vehicle with a 175,00 miles it had bad manners on wet roads , When I changed my shocks out, my left rear had no resistance
Yeah I decided visually that they were worn out before ever driving this truck. Compared to the world of struts and strut lifts a set of bilstiens and a home brewed levelling kit is cheap and easy.
I put a 6.4 starter on my truck and with that and the giant Die Hard AGM batteries my truck starts as soon as I turn the key 1 second or less. I give credit mainly to the 6.4 starter.
It RIPS.........
Mine starts faster when cold as the oil is thicker. Usually about 1-2 seconds. Hot it can take a bit longer. 2-3 seconds.
5-seconds isn't too bad.
6.4 starter spins significantly faster. Bolt up. It's cool, but when the stock one works fine it's hard to justify. If it dies, definitely worth upgrading.
HMMm. Please explain. What's the diff on that starter? Direct swap? Gear reduction?
The 6.4 starter has a much higher rpm. Engine fires up right now.
Yes it's straight install. I got mine off eBay. There are so many 6.4 trucks in the boneyard.
Mine came out of a wrecked with low miles. Could tell because it looked really fresh.
Nice. Well this one cranks but I'll file that away for future consideration. In respect to the batteries it would be nice to have a faster fire up time. My other common rail diesels fire up pretty much instantly when warm.
