Had a guy try and tell me his Excursion gets 25 MPG. Now this is local not on long trips..
And today he was telling everyone how he had the Turbo set where he could only build 7 lbs of boost. And had pulled 32,000 lbs with that 7 lbs of boost.
My 7.3 gets 16mpg all around in the summer and 14mpg in the winter. Long highway trips I can get 18-19mpg. My personal best is 21.7mpg average from Austin TX to Buffalo NY but that was solo keeping the speed to 65.
The best my 2wd 6.0L Excursion ever did for mileage was 20.2, that was stock tires and driving 55 mph following a moving van. There was some stop and go mixed in too.
In general what I've learned about fuel economy is...figures can lie and liars can figure!
PS My mpg is always hand calculated. The odd part is my lie-o-meter in my gas Excursion is always very close to actual when towing.

Reason: added ps
I regularly get between 25-28mpg while towing. It's a special device I use. Send me $19.99 and I'll tell you the secret...or I'll delete your email, whatever I feel like doing.
We're in the election homestretch, "anything goes" right? LOL!

I got one of dem... I get 35mpg with a triple.... towing my 10k trailer and 7K boat.
I no longer care what the mileage is... it's great for what I do.
Have racked up over 700K miles on the 4 7.3's since 2001. The best mileage goes to the 00 X at 19.8mpg, full tank 55-60 mph out West. Worse mileage goes to the 99 dually 10-12mpg. With that said I've never hit an honest 20 mpg and I've tried in the 00 X since 2003.
Just returned from a 2700 mile trip from central PA to Myrtle Beach, SC. Then from Myrtle Beach to Key West, FL and back home. Mostly interstate with the cruise set anywhere between 70 - 73 mph . Overall average was right at 17 mpg, hand calculated.
Start running over 70 - 71 mph and the mpg drops.
