After changing the oil cooler out I am getting everything put back together. I of course had to take the fuel and oil filter housing off of the truck to do this. I have it installed back on the truck but have a question.
Do I need to bleed the fuel system now that I have removed the lines and the filter housing? If I do, what is the proper procedure for this?
Cycle the key 3-6 times until you hear the pump cut off (~20 seconds), the system purges itself via the air bleed at the top of the fuel pressure regulator. 2 cycles is normally enough to clear the air after a filter change (you can see when the air is gone on a fuel pressure gauge), but after removing the fuel lines and the housing I've had to cycle 6 times and even actually start the truck before it completely cleared.
This hole circled in orange is the hole air passes through out of the top of the secondary filter, there's a channel down the regulator cover (2nd pic) that allows air to bypass the fuel pressure regulator spring.
Great, thanks for the information. I thought that was all I needed to do, but after having the fuel filter housing off I didn't want to mess up and pump air through the system and end up with a big mess.
Got it running. Runs great, engine staying cool. I haven't worked it hard yet, but it looks good.
New problem. When I was running the fuel pump the gasket in the filter housing wasn't seated right. Ended up with fuel spraying all over the engine, a couple of quarts at least. Now I have a strong smell in the cab. I used engine degreaser and cleaned the fuel off where I could find it but still have the smell. I thought the odor was fuel, but taking my wife and kids around town chasing pokemon I decided it could be exhaust. Tomorrow I will have to crawl under the hood and check things out. I suspect the turbo connection did not go together quite right.
