Trying to help a local guy with a 91 Bronco 351W/5.8L. His engine wiring harness was chewed through by rodents and then 'repaired' by someone who didn't know what they were doing. The nature of the 'repairs' basically render the entire harness useless and impractical to repair. There are several harnesses available for sale locally from different year trucks - an 87, an 88, a 92, a 93 and a 95. The best condition ones are the 92 and 93 harnesses. The question is, can he use any other year harnesses without having to change connectors or other parts? I know Ford made running changes to these trucks that sometimes make that impossible, so I thought I'd ask what he could use before he spent the money on one. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
I can't speak to whether it will work but just based on what I know about the changes that happened in 92 I would probably aim for a harness out of an 87-91. In 92 they made the move from a cable controlled speedometer to the electronically controlled PSOM. Might cause problems if you cross generations.
There are minor differences between years, but are essentially similar. If you sit down with even a Chiltons manual (which has half way decent wiring diagrams), DVOM, test light, you should be able to hash out a functional working harness with the 92.
I'm flabbergasted that you can't find an exact match used in TX. Seems like evrytime in the last few years I blew through big D the were dozens of yards along the beltway. But there's always folk here who say there's no OBS parts in yards.
The best bet would be get a factory disc/diagrams, but that means buying.
There are significant differences between the various years. 85/86 were the first generation EFI and mounted the ECM centered underneath the dashboard. The wiring harness was pretty much stand alone and the vehicle harness was similar to the earlier carbureted trucks. 87 was the first year to mount the ECM in the familiar location behind the driver side kick panel, but the engine harness was integrated with all the under hood wiring. I believe this carried into 88. 89 to 91 used an engine harness that disconnected from the main harness via 4 round connectors located on the driver side inner fender. This is probably the harness you want. 92 and later used a square multi pin connector for the engine harness and it is not directly compatible with your application.
I understand the 5.0 harness will fit the 5.8 despite the wider dimensions. All engines of your vintage are SD and EECIV/OBD1.
