Hello Ford lovers. This is my first post and want some advice on couple of ford trucks i'm looking at it. Been a Chevy guy my whole life, but i always told myself if i buy a new truck i'll go because my grandpa he loves them. RIP
Welcome to the forum, not knowing how much sod weighs, I think either truck would handle towing a trailer with a couple of pallets of sod. The v8 truck looks like a better deal because it has so much more in options, both are nice trucks, the 2.7 ecoboost is no slouch, 5.0 is a nice engine as well.
It is hard for me to recommend a naturally-aspirated engine for towing, even when the truck with the V8 has so many options. That's because the turbos create such a flat torque curve, and that makes the engine so willing to pull. I recently pulled my 5000 lb boat for 2000 miles on a route where I've towed other boats with NA engines, and I am sold on turbos for towing.
But, I've read that the 5.0 is no slouch, so maybe you can't go wrong. However, my nod would be to the 2.7L.
The silver one looks like it has a lift kit installed? Not sure this is the same as you're talking about; they have the asking price over $46,000. I wouldn't touch a modified truck like that with a ten-foot pole; aftermarket modifications like that aren't covered under your factory warranty. The dealer and/or modifier may warrant them, but if you're travelling and have a suspension problem you may have problems.
Engine choice is more driven by preference instead of one being better than the other. Many of us have become addicted to the turbo torque curve and the towing experience that it delivers, but of course the engines sound like an angry vacuum cleaner. I'd test drive both and see what you like.

The website asking 46,000. The salesman gave me a price on it for 40,700.
I guess that my military discount? lol IDK.
Welcome! Don't spend too much time internet shopping, just ask your local dealers what offset from invoice they'll give you on something in stock. Thats the amount over or under invoice they'll give you as a sale price before any rebates get factored in. Only shop inside your state as often advertising laws vary, and what seems like an amazing deal for a little drive is no better at the end of the day and you don't have local service. Forget the rebates and do 0%. Military rebates still applies if you're eligible. Go in and pick the truck and buy it. It really is that easy. How much does a pallet of sod weight? On a guess, I'd say the 2.7 would be the better bet for you overall.
The website for both trucks looks like MSRP minus a whole bunch of rebates (you may or may not be eligible for all). He simply also discounted the truck from the dealers profit margin. If you're unfamiliar with the shopping process you can also just use TrueCar or similar buyers program. Yes, they are still prices set by dealership but they are pretty darn competitive. It's what I use to help family members shop for something other than a Ford.
The 2.7 we have in our new 2016 is a peppy little engine. I did like the 5 liter when i drove it as well it didn't seem like there was much in the way of lag either. I'd take the advice above and drive both and see which one fits you better. Both will tow what you need. We are sitting at 12.0 L/100km (19.6mpg) with about 50/50 mix city/highway driving currently at 2600km. Not taking it easy either I like sport mode. I think the 5 liter from what i've read will get around that too so the next long trip we take i'll get to see what its like on a straight highway run.
I would go with the 5.0 just because this is the first year for the 2.7 and I never buy anything the first year out. I am on my second 3.5 Eco but would have bought a 5.0 if it had the options I wanted.
Looks like the silver truck price of $40,000 does not include the lift kit package. The side sticker on the window was plus $62K. Don't think you would be able to purchase that truck for $40k.
