2004 4x4 needs new engine
I really like the conversion. I put in one of the 1st gen 12valves. Just finishing it up now, but have been driving it. Better be finished in a couple days since that is what I am taking to TX!
Conversion isn't very difficult, piddly stuff gets you. Like getting A/C lines redone and fit in.
I paid 5200 for Ex, and by the time I am finished will probably have $20K total, including all parts and labor. But that is all new parts on the engine. And I redid all the suspension, wheels and tires for $1500. I am keeping it as stock as possible. I used the 4R100 with the factory ECM control, didn't get a standalone, but I did have a torque converter custom built to the tune of $1500. Seems to be working fine with the proper tune. The guy doing mine (I am helping where I can to save money) has done quite a few and is doing a great job.
I went the conversion route because that is what I wanted. I bought the V10 with the intention of putting in the Cummins.
One thing is for sure. These things aren't cheap to mess with!
I appreciate the help. When I get in front of my computer I can do the private message thing. I am posting off my cell and can't see the whole site.
I am glad I found this site tho!
It's good to meet a lot of folks that have the same interests.
If you are coming thru BR, LA and its around lunchtime let me know and I'll buy u lunch and check out that diesel!
I can still drive mine so if it works out I'll bring it
I bought my 2004 with just under 200k miles for 3700.
Put a 6" lift with 35" tires.
Now have just under 300k miles and now need the motor.
I'm already about 10k into this thing so when you say 20k, I can easily see that happening to me too!
But I figure if I spend that much after I'm all said and done then I "can't" ever sell it!!
The wife won't be able to make me sell it haha!
There are some things that can be done to increase HP if you are rebuilding one.
Higher compression pistons.....9.5 to 10:1 forged.
Custom ground camshafts
Larger fuel pump
Larger injectors
All of which can be rather expensive.
Superchargers are great but need to be intercooled or water meth added to cool intake.
If I were in your situation (and at sea level like you) I would just get a Ford reman. The warranty is great and the motor would last a very long time.
If more power is what you really want I would suggest larger fuel pump, larger injectors and a tune to maximize those additions. In my opinion these are the best bang for the buck. $600 for the SCT tunner and 1 tune, $300 for injectors, and $150 for a bigger pump.
If even more power is wanted add a turbo and a diesel intercooler and retune for those.
Again my supercharger, makes my V10 a monster but dollar for dollar a turbo set up would be better....my second excursion will be twin turbo, one of these days, if that tells you anything.

I just finished reading your adventure with the supercharger!
The knocking u had is the same as I get in higher RPM but when I first start it is loud for a couple knocks then goes away and comes back at higher rpm kinda dull sounding like I heard in your video..
I'm pretty sure I can't fix the problem I have. I'm thinking a new motor
No supercharger.
A good used motor might be the best and do some upgrades. I reprogrammed my current motor and it made a little difference.
Man oh man just don't know! Haha

Crank is forged on this motor and can handle "some" issues. You could be lucky and just need a bearing or two. Lots of labor but only cost about $150 for the parts.
You could even sell the motor later if it's just bearings and you put new ones in it. If you are set on a new, used motor.
As soon as I figure out how to check the pm I will respond haha

I tried posting a pic but not sure how.
Unless you put on a power adder to compensate for the extremely high gearing you now have due to tall tires.
One other thing can make it "feel" like it has more power is preventing the rear springs from flexing under load. Alot of torque is lost due to spring wrap. Ladder bar type setups can help prevent wrap and alows more torque to wheels and can help emensly.
Plus the new used motor of course.

a power adder is one of the other things you were talking about I'm assuming?
I have a SCT tune on it currently and it made a good difference.
the suspension lift made this thing ride pretty rough. not sure what kind I have but I read somewhere that billstein shocks? would make it ride better I think...would that be what your talking about spring wrap?
