Truck buying advice
Hey guys, haven't been on in a while. But my wife's expedition was hit and the insurance company totaled it. We are now looking at excursions which is what I own (2000 4x4 7.3) I've always been a diehard 7.3 fan. I have experience working on them and confidence buying them. However I wanted to get some opinions on the 6.0 topic. We found a super super nice one that just looks too good to not dip my toe in the water. It is an 2005 6.0 with the EGR delete done. My question is, am I going to seriously regret this or are that not as terrible of an engine as everyone says? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Steve

The 6.0L's can be good if they are taken care of (maintenance wise) and have the problem areas addressed (oil cooler, EGR, etc). I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if it has good maintenance records. I would connect a scan tool to it before buying and watch ECT vs EOT though, so check the health of the oil cooler.
How many miles on it? Pretty clean looking rig.

198k, I'm not familiar with the problem areas so I'll do some digging tonight that way if I go look I can be prepared. Not familiar with the two parameters you gave either but I'll talk with my buddies about narrowing a quality scan tool as I only have a super chips programmer and a basic scanning device.

Do some research in the 6.0L section of this forum tonight. You will learn a lot about them and what to look for.
I have an 04 6.0L truck and I love the power it has. I still DD my 7.3L, but I would not worry about towing anything with my 6.0L.

If I could have afforded an '05-'07 6.0L when I bought my truck I probably would have gotten one instead of my early '03 (please don't burn my house down). I love my 7.3L but I like the '05-'07 body style the best. What I wouldn't give to have OEM coilovers in the front (I'm on my 3rd set of front springs)!
You've got to remember that no matter how good the engine is, any 7.3L you find (regardless of mileage) is going to be AT LEAST 14 years old. There's going to be a steady stream of stuff to repair or replace that isn't associated with the engine (and some that is).
I don't regret my decision one bit though. It's had some issues (what vehicle doesn't) and it had 146K when I bought it but I love it today as much as I did the day I saw it 9 years ago looking lonely on the car lot begging me to drive it. If I was in the market to replace my totaled 7.3L I would be looking for an '05-'07 6.0L. I do all my own work still (I'm not that old yet) so I wouldn't touch a 6.4L and I can't afford a 6.7L.
