My seat cover is good but the foam below is blowing orange dust when someone sits in the seat - it's rotten and needs replacing. I would like to go to a stiffer foam when I R&R the seat cover - does anyone know the approximate weight of the factory foam? I am guessing maybe 24 pound,
and would like to make it stiffer, maybe up to about 40 pound. Anyone done that or knows the factory weight?
yeah, that is my problem - I know I can go up to heavier weight foam, and can even mix and match between the backrest and the seat, but I'm not sure what the baseline weight is, just that all the bench seats I have ever owned have been sorta gushy (technical term there.) Wife has a bad back and I like a firmer seat, so it seemed a good idea to buy the appropriate foam and go at it. By the way, if you have an electric carving knife, you can buy upholstery foam, carve to fit, and come out even cheaper. My aim, though, is to get the firmer seat.
In a situation like this I usually just start surfin'. Sometimes you get lucky and you stumble across a website that lists the specs of what you're looking for and you can get a baseline to work from.
Sometimes you get REAL lucky and ND comes along and tells you exactly what you need AND where to get it.
I was looking for some closed-cell foam to reconfigure a gun case awhile back and kept bumping into upholstery foam vendors...I know they're out there.
Thanks - I have been hitting the foam companies' web sites as well - like I said, I was hoping to find a Ford original starting point. Plus different listings squirrel around with the ratings, one listing shows high density as 33#, another says that is high density.
You might also try to call any upholstery shop and pick their brains on the #'s of foams they use. Ask about a comfortable stiffer foam and see if they can dial you in on a common # for a foam they use. If you call locally they might even sell you the foam direct.
I've got a buddy in the upholstery business and I've reached out to him just now. I'll reply if he sends me any information.

I found the same problem and discrepancies when poking around.
These guys may be a good place to call and get some information from Parts Unlimited
I think a lot of the squishyness from ours trucks is from the lack of foam. They are mostly spring. This is the main reason I am looking at a different seat for my SC. I realize I didn't even come close to answering your question, just wondering if a couple inches of stiffer foam will make much difference.
The PO of my 73 decided to add foam (instead of replace the old) before recovering the seat. He did a nice job on the black vinyl upholstery, but the added layer(s) of foam put my head almost to the ceiling, even in that big ol F250.
