Been looking for a 6.7 for a few weeks with not much luck. Found a couple nice one but they sold before I could make an offer. Found another but interior was trashed. There are not many Lariats in my area in my range. Finally found a 2011 Lariat, crew cab, 4x4, seems to have everything but nav and sunroof. Has 109,000 from texas (now in Indiana and Im in Ohio) looks really clean in and out. They are asking $31500 but I noticed in the pictures exhaust wasnt stock. Find out it has a full turbo back with muffler, egr delete and a sct tuner with it. They claim it was owned by an older gentleman but should I be leery of these add ons and pass? Id try to get them down a little bit but hate to get a truck thats been thrashed.
Do you have emissions check in your area? Are they considering the possibility of emission testing in the future? Does it come with the tuner and all the parts to return it to stock?
Personally, I would stay away from a deleted truck without any history of the truck and/or knowing the previous owners.
If I were going to buy used, I would want a 2015 or newer. They seem to have less problems than the 2011-2014 trucks.
I cant find/afford a 2012 it seems, wouldnt it have dropped a valve by now if it had issues? But I dont know the trucks history, just what I see on Fords Oasis which isn't much
Thing is, its a crap shoot. Not every 2011 in the specific build date range has self destructed. Problem is, the risk is simply higher of a specific incident occuring. The repair is around 10K. There is a Ford TSB on this issue, and they have identified the cause. The thing is that there never was a recall. If you were "lucky" to have the failure in the first 5yr/100K miles, then warranty covered. There are no less than three new threads on this forum alone with guys that have blown engines recently, and all were 2011's.
I get the fact that newer ones are out of reach $$$-wise. Think about it another way, though that if you take the dive, and have the problem, you are going to have to spend that additional 10K to get it fixed, or you have a very expensive lawn ornament.

If you can't afford a 2012 or newer, you likely can't afford an unplanned, unforeseen out-of-warranty engine failure which, to be completely honest hasn't been THAT common on a 2011. But that doesn't take away the fact that risk still exists for that model year. An even bigger red flag for me would be the tuner and emissions delete. BTW, I am a Ford dealer tech. Just my two cents.
My guess is that this truck was used to haul trailers from Indiana to the rest of the country.
If any year is deleted and tuned, you absolutely need the oem parts as part of the deal, and to eyeball the owner. Tuned and run for mpg is one thing; black smoking hot roding another.
X2 well said. This is why I traded out my 2011. Just not worth worth $10k risk, but otherwise gorgeous.
