Purchasing Advice - Yea or Nay?
I was hoping that some of you might be able to advise on an F250 I'm looking at. It's easy to get wrapped up with how something looks and runs, but the possibility for repairs down the road that cost $$$ leaves me with a slight gut feeling that tells me to move on, as much as it would pain me to do so. I'm a 7.3 guy and this is my first 6.4, so I'm not terribly familiar with them yet.
The truck I looked at is an 08 model King Ranch that looks spectacular. It has obviously been taken care of as there isn't a nick or scratch on it which is all the more amazing since the owner is the 4th owner. The truck looks great and runs great.
The truck has an H&S XRT Pro Street Tuner with a custom tune for milage. The truck also has the EGR and DPF delete and has a 4" turbo back exhaust with 6" tip.The tuner provides for nice, but seemingly not aggressive power but does give a nice puff if black smoke when ya get aggressive with the gas, say to pass a vehicle.
My concern is that I'm not, nor ever have been a "rolling coal" kinda guy - not that it's like that with this tune. What concerns me is that according to the owner, I don't want to mess with switching tunes and if I were to put it on stock mode, as I'm inclined to do, it'll "run like ****" because of the EGR and DPF deletes. Is this something to be concerned about? He said that he had the check engine light come on about a year ago after the deletes, but he reset the codes and it hasn't come back on again.
Is this normal when setting up a truck like this or is it something I should stay away from? Like I mentioned, it's a beautiful truck in immaculate condition, but I'm trying to keep that from blinding me from potential very expensive repairs later on.
If you buy this truck you should get all the emissions stuff in case you need it. Also the tuner and monitor for gauges.
Likely the way it is setup not only provides the power but also the better fuel ecomony.
You should read the tech folder and download the bible (coffee book) as well. That will go along way towards understanding the motor.
the code was likely the P2002 code because he has an aftermarket intake/air cleaner on it.
I had the H&S to get rid of regens, never really saw any mileage gains. I would be very leery of a 4-owner truck with deleted emissions even if it does look like new.
