My stepdad'd 98 Explorer XLT has power mirrors similar to my Ranger, but his have lights on the bottom. When you use the keyless entry to unlock the door, the interior lights come on, along with the mirror lights (puddle lamps). My stepdad was visiting last night and I just learned how helpful they are in my dark gravel/dirt driveway. Anyway, has anyone tried installing these types of mirrors on a ranger? Would the mirror mounts be the same? It would be nice to have factory mirrors with lights in them, from a totalled explorer or something.
Has anyone mounted lights underneath a truck that come on when a door is opened? I'd like to maybe pick up some cheapo fog lights or cargo lights to mount underneath that I could wire to the door ajar curcuit. Anyone has thoughts or ideas on this?
I think it can probably be done. I know of a company that sells mirrors that have lighted blinkers on them...so if they can do that I would think that you could hook up the Explorer mirrors in similar fashion to the interior lights circuit. It would just be a matter of whether the Explorer mirrors mount up OK and then tapping into the right wire(s) at the right place(s).
FWIW, here is a PDF Instruction Manual on how to hook up those flashing mirrors I mentioned...it has photos and shows how to take things apart a little bit, so it might help you get an idea of what's involved in your proposed project:
