Troubleshooting 2002 7.3
I don't know how many threads I searched through for this truck with identical problems, with no solution ever reported back. Or my favorite, when posts reference a picture or a link, and you either can't see the picture anymore, or the link is dead. VERY FRUSTRATING!
I guess I should have clarified, but my truck is usable at this point. It still has some hiccups that I am going to have to troubleshoot. The list of stuff that I ended up needing is as follows:
1. Hutch and Harpoon mod with Racor PS120-2 Strainer/Pre-Filter and new tank pick up ( I don't know how the truck actually ran with the intake screens that were in it. The tank was clean, but the screens were bad)
2. New oil, fuel, and air filters
3. Both uvch and drivers side uvch wiring harness pigtail.
4. ICP sensor, exhaust back flow sensor (and I cleaned the completely stopped up tube, and IPR rebuild (it was pretty dirty).
5. Number 8 (the guy I bought it from told me that he didn't change it because they didn't have the long lead injector in stock when he bought the others) and number 4 injectors
6. New fuel pump because the old one couldn't keep up under a load once I started driving it
7. New fuel line from pump to the fuel filter hard line
8. Fuel pressure regulator rebuild kit
9. New tires
10. New driveshaft carrier support bearing
11. Bilstein shocks on all four corners
12. Had a major oil leak from the rtv between the HPOP gear inspection plate and the HPOP reservoir.
13. Coolant flush and replaced with rotella elc red coolant and distilled water.
14. Time, time, and more time diagnosing
The IPR still acts up from time to time. I think that I am going to take it back apart and clean it again. It is good most of the time, but the truck gets surgey when it acts up. That is exactly what it did before I rebuilt it. The Duty cycle would spike and plummet constantly. Now, for the most part, the icp duty cycle pretty much follows the icp. I am going to load up a graph of the two to see if what everyone thinks. From my list, its no wonder that it was hard to pinpoint one problem. I honestly think that the trucks problems started with the stopped up fuel screens in the tank.
The list of stuff that I still need to do is:
1. Pinion seal has small leak
2. Battery light needs to be turned off. I put a brand new alternator on it under the previous owners warranty and that didn't fix it. The batteries are a few years old now, but test good. I may go to a different place to see if their load tester says otherwise. If the batteries test good, then I guess I need to check for a short. somewhere.
3. I have fixed the drivers side power lock, but the 3 other doors need the resistors removed and replaced with a piece of copper to make them work.
I think that I covered it all so far. The truck drives good for the most part, and I am glad to have it around.
