Problem with fuel sender getting stuck...

Just as the title says, i've got a problem with the fuel sender getting stuck on E.

Usually happens when I go around a corner or such. Usually I can break it free by swerving or else there is a certain left hand turn with a bump that will usually break it free.

On the few occasions that it's really stuck and my swerving and bumping techniques do not work, I'll pull the sender and look at everything. I can never figure out why it's getting stuck.

I've tried repositioning the float on the rod, either to one side or the other, but it doesn't seem to make a difference much.

Which way is the float supposed to be on the rod? Offset To the back or front of the tank?

Anyone have an idea?

Well, the float and rod are oriented laterally and movement of the truck is longitudinal. Therein lies the issue - the pivot point upon which the arm rotates is somehow binding.

Right I'm pretty sure the float is getting hung up somehow

When you've looked at the sending unit, does it look like something is actually binding up. Or do you think the metal points (on the metal tab) is sticking on the resistor wires?

Pull the sender and test at multiple angles. Also consider opening the " windings box" and take a look at its internals.

I am 99% confident that it's not an electrical problem. I'm pretty sure the float is actually getting stuck on something when it gets pushed down by the sloshing fuel. Possibly the side of the tank or maybe the pick up tube?

Sounds like you're going to have to remove it to find the problem. I know how they work, but I haven't seen one (for these trucks) up close. Maybe someone else has more info.

That's just it, I have removed it. Several times. I've never found anything wrong.

This seems like such a stupid problem, it should be extremely simple to fix, get here I am asking about it because I can't figure it out.

It could be the contact arm is warn. The contact looks like 1/2 of a ignition points set. If it is loosing contact the gauge goes to empty. When you drive like your texting (swerving around) the contact could get reestablished.
You might be in for a new sending unit. I've seen them on ebay for about $40.00 + shipping.

Just keep the tank full.
Since day one? Sounds like Hio and Brian are on to it. I've never taken that cover off Hio mentioned. But I am assuming inside there will be a contact as Brian described rubbing up against a resistance coil. Like your basic rheostat. Maybe that contact is squared off so sharp that it is digging in to the resistance coil instead of brushing up against it.

Can you see the float while looking through the filler neck?

I've never looked. Maybe with a flashlight. I'll have to try that.

When I first got my truck, I could hear the float rubbing up against the inside of the gas tank and the gas gauge would never read higher than half full --the float was catching on one of the indentions on the inside, front of the tank. I took the sender assembly out and slightly bent the arm (towards the rear of the tank) so that the float and arm assembly would move freely.

contact point could be corroded , give it a quick clean with a wire tooth brush or steel wool .
