When the pickup coil in the 79 died, I swapped-in the one from the 77.
I went to O'Reilly to get a new one, and when I installed it, the truck barely ran. It would run at idle, but as soon as you touched the gas, it'd die. So I put the (77) pickup back in.
I went to Napa, and they show two pickup coils for the 79 460 - same two as for the 77 460. They show a model MP700 and a MP700SB. I tried the MP700 on the 77, and it also barely ran. I swapped in the MP700SB, and although it was a very tight fit on the shaft, it went right in and the 77 now also runs fine.
I ran out of sun to change the 79 tonight, but I hope the MP700 works better in the 79 than the O'Reilly part!
As an interesting side note, the Napa site says these are High Altitude parts for the 79 (but not the 77), and these are the only ones they list for the 460
In the 79, the pickup coil formerly in the 77 worked beautifully. The new NAPA MP700SB works great in the 77
The 79, with the MP700, would barely start and run. I had to adjust the timing over 20 degrees to get it to start and run reliably. Reconnected the vacuum advance hose, and as soon as you touch the throttle, it dies
So, I'm gonna take this MP700 back to NAPA and swap it for a MP700SB. They appear identical, but the function is certainly quite different

1974/79 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline with DuraSpark: There is only ONE V8 pickup coil!
D4PZ-12A112-A .. Stator Assy aka Magnetic Pickup Coil (Motorcraft DU-1A) / Available from Ford & auto parts stores.
This puppy was also used on ALL 1974/79 FoMoCo V8 Passenger Cars except 1979 LTD/Grand Marquis 351W with EEC (Electronic Engine Control aka onboard computer).
Try to stick with genuine Ford or Motorcraft on these. I rebuilt the motor in my truck several years ago and decided to replace the pickup coil while I was at it, since the original had over 100K miles on it. (Thought I was doing the right thing) The "new" aftermarket one lasted a year or so before I had to be towed home. I replaced it with another "new" aftermarket one which lasted less than that, then another "new" aftermarket one wouldn't even start the truck. (I put an ohm meter across the leads and it had an open circuit.) I went out to the shed and got the original I had hung on a nail when I rebuilt the motor and put it back in. The thing is almost 40 years old and has 360,000 miles on it and still works fine. The wires on the genuine Ford unit are much heavier compared to the aftermarket ones and stand up to the constant movement from the vacuum plate to which it is mounted on.
The first stator from O'Reilly would idle but not run at higher RPMs. Like the timing was way off. So I got it to factory time, and when I hooked up the vacuum advance, it'd die when you hit the gas
The second stator, from Napa, couldn't be installed on the 79 because it was too tight. On the 77, it could be forced, but the vacuum advance couldn't turn it
The third stator, from Napa, worked fine in the 77
The fourth stator, from Napa, acted the same as the first from O'Reilly
the fifth stator, from Napa, worked fine in the 79
I couldn't see any difference in the stators, outside the color of the wires. They all measured the same resistance across the coil, and were the same dimensions-except for the one with too small a hole, of course. The only possible difference in the installation could have been the orientation of the little 8-walled star thing. After two or three removals, I noticed it had a dot on one of the star arms, perhaps indicating number one? However, the roll pin did not allow the star to align the pickup to the mark on number one TDC. I don't know the significance of the dot, but all the trucks are running good now...
jade 79 is correct. The MP700 NAPA/Echlin is a higher quality part. The MP700SB (Silverline Boxed) is a cheaper version of the same part. Always use the better parts. They are more expensive, but are OEM quality.
I did, in fact, have a bad pickup coil. But in all the swapping, I put the reluctor in 180 degrees out. No visible difference, but a big difference in how the truck ran. Or didn't run
