So was going over the pass today and my 38R started surging pretty good when pulling the hill I thought the 38R's now days where not supposed to do this. It's not real loud but it's noticeable. I didn't happen to look at the boost guage when it was doing it I just let off the throttle a little and it went away.
What RPM was it surging at? Mine would surge below 2k with 200/80 hybrids. I bought a Wicked wheel 11 blade and it stopped the surging, but the low rpm boost could be better.
I didn't really look but I'm guessing It was right around 2k it was when it shifted into OD it was still spooling good but was just making that thwp thwp thwp noise like my sticker did before I put a wicked wheel on.
Was just asking it never did it with the stock turbo and a wicked wheel and I have done that same drive hundreds of times but this was the first with the 38R. I'm not even sure the exact RPM I do know I was going around 75 before I hit the pass and I barely lost any speed going up the pass until I let off because of the surging.
If you decide to replace the compressor wheel, stay away from from the wicked wheel 2. The D66 wheel or the Riffraff wheel will move more air at lower Rpm. The 11 blade WW2 is more of a peak rpm wheel.
I've run into surging with my setup and the 38R when towing and the CC is on and am going up a grade, the CC will increase throttle substantially and next thing you know, the whooshing starts followed by aggressive pulsing. Generally, I get out of CC going up grades but sometimes on long drives, I forget to before the CC stuffs the throttle...

This is the kind of situation I could see surge issues come into play. What altitude were you at when this occurred?
