I have a 69 f100 360 auto. When I first start it and get going, the engine wil surge a few times (rpm drops way down, for a second, then picks back up) while I have a steady amount of pressure on the gas pedal. It only does it when its first starting. It's died a few times when pulling from a complete stop. It also makes a clicking sound while the rpms are down. After it happens a few times, things smooth out and it runs normal. I'm wondering if it just needs more time to warm up before driving, or if there is something that can be done. Maybe it's getting too much gas? Any suggestions?
Does your choke work? Is it up to or close to operating temperature when it does this? First issue could be the choke isnt closing (Surging when cold and not at operating temperature) or else it isn't opening when warmed up
Hmm, those are good questions, I haven't even messed with the choke since I got it, usually just pump the gas a few times before starting it. I'll take a look at that.
Even IF the choke is working, that engine is built from a lot of cast iron. And it takes a few minutes (sometimes 20-30) to get it all warmed up. An electric cooling fan helps a little more than a stock fan for this too.

2X. 1969 Bumps had manual chokes. With the choke cable in front of the driver. Under the right side of the dash cluster (right side of steering column). The PO of this truck may have removed this cable and wired the choke on the carb Open.
