I just put my Sidewinder system on my truck, not too long ago, I also bought and installed the pyro and boost gauge, I have pulled all over heck with this truck and have never got anymore than 9 pounds of boost. My EGT's are about right when I am pulling with the truck so I don't think I can turn my fuel up anymore. I was wondering what you guys are boosting on your banks trucks.
Second question, I was thinking about ditching the muffler system I got with Banks and just running a 3.5 or 4 inch diameter pipe all the way back. I have been told by quite a few people this is the way to go and it will also lower my EGT's. Any idea what size I should go for? Well thanks for the help. Scotty
I've been wondering the same thing. I have the Banks Sidewinder as well, and I'd like to remove the muffler and put a straight pipe on. Does your banks have the Ram Air?
What's the cut-off for EGT's? How hot is TOO HOT? And where can you turn up the fuel?
The people at Banks and Diesel Tune, where I got my fuel lines replaced was 1100 MAX, He said 1050 was the sweet spot, I do have the ram air and to adjust the fuel you pull the sidecover off the pump, put the engine at Top Dead Center and use an allen wrench and adjust it a 1/4 turn at a time. After you adjust the fuel put the cover back and take it for a spin, preferably with a load and a steep hill, if the temp doesn't goe to 1050 add fuel, if go over, take it away. I hear from alot of fellers if you get rid of the muffler you shed off soem EGT's. Hope this helps..
I had the local muffler shop take out the muffler and plumb in a piece of 4" pipe from the turbo outlet pipe to the end and man what a difference. The truck runs a little snappier and seems to keep the heat down a little better too. Also for your own info, it really isn't a whole lot louder unless you really throttle on it and it starts to come up around 6 lbs of boost. I kinda like it. It really seems to scoot a little better and it only cost me 75.00 so I think it is money well spent. Scott

Hey just reading the gauges, I believe that is what a turbo does is pressurize the air to higher than atmospheric standards, in order to force more air into the cylinders. But hey, I am just a Marine, not a rocket scientist. Scotty
9psi is about what they should do you got a lot of compression(22.5:1) if you what more boost you will have to lower your compression(17:1 would be great then 30lb of boost) Although if the turbo goes to crap the motor will not run worth a crap. I love to do this if I had more money and I'm not sure if there is any company that make a piston for the idi that will do this. and get a different turbo the bigger the exhaust the better on a diesel I'd love to see a 4 1/2 inch on my truck after I turbo it.
It would be nice to have some more boost capability but until then I get by with what it has. I put a 4" exhaust on the truck and even with the Banks sidewinder, it seems to have alot more pick up and take off power. Almost seems like the turbo boosts alot faster. It sounds really good too without the muffler, I will never put another muffler on a diesel. Plus my average EGT has gone down about 100-150 degrees just traveling doen the road. I kinda of had a test track to test of the exhaust. I travel the same stretch of road everyday at the same time. So I kind of hada baseline and that is how I figures out my EGT's average. Anyhow, the truck runs really good, doesn't burn any oil and pulls my Jeep so I guess it works good for what I need it for.. Scotty
We usually tell people they can run up to 13psi of boost with an idi. You can achieve it by turning up the max fuel screw, or by adjusting the wastegate rod.
The extra power with the higher boost is nice, but you have to watch the EGTs.
Ken, how do I adjust the wastegate rod on my turbo. I have already adjusted my fuel up to the safe max and would just like to see a little more boost out of the truck, if you could guide me through whcih way to turn it, how much at a time and the specifics I would really appreciate it. Mine right now under full load never goes above 8 7/8's lbs of boost. 13 would be awesome and I do have a EGT gauge so it isn't a big deal if I have to back off, it would really be nice to be able to lean into it a little more. I would really appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks, Scott
If you turn the rod "in", shorten its length, it will increase the boost because the actuator will have to work harder to open the wastegate.
Another way to do it is to install a needle valve or pressure regulator in the line to the wastegate and adjust the pressure accordingly.
By the way, don't I see you posting on The Diesel Stop.com? My name over there is land_yaght by the way. I haven't put my latest project (see sig) over there yet because I'm saving it to suprise a few people at the next clash. sshhhhhhhh..
Thanks for the help and yes you do see me over in the dieselstop.com, I try to ask questions and post in both forums, that way I get a pretty good variety of info. I am really trying to make the truck the best it can possibly be so I try to make as many improvements I can and still keep it functional. I am going to try my hand at finding a reasonable solution for lack of gears, so stand by, I will probably have more questions for you. Scotty
