diesel-racer, do you have any pics of your truck, it sounds like a pretty bad machine. If you have any pics I would like to see them. Again thanks for the help, I am going to try and turn my wastegate rod this afternoon, after work. Any idea how much I should be truning the rod. IE 1 turn, 2 turns, 1/4 inch. Just to give me an idea of what is going to work, also where can I get a pressure regulator? Is is a common item I can find at my local NAPA? That could also be an option. Thanks for the help. Scotty
Diesel-racer, I screwed the wastegate rod in all the way, I started with one turn, I couldn't even notice, so I went 5 turns, went to about 9 7/8 pounds, I brought it back and turned it another 5 or so turns, I pretty much turned it to the full extent and I now have about 11 pounds. Not bad, I would like to get the other two pounds you said I should be able to gain. Will the line pressure regualtor get me those pounds? If so, where can I find one of them? Anyway, I definately got an improvement and would liek to draw the rest out of the engine. thanks for the help. Scotty
Do these same mods work for the newer PSD's? If I read through the thread correctly, it sounds like a couple of simple tweaks can really add some snap - wastegate rod and fuel adjustments - can it really be this simple to pull a few extra ponies out?
I've just read this post... i've got the banks system on my 87 as well. My egt's are in the dirt so i'd like to up the boost as well. Wastegate or boost controller is easy but where do you adjust the fuel at. I haven't done anything yet but i wanted to know so that if i up the boost to 11-12psi i can up fuel if needed.
JBoe, turning up the fuel you have to find the cover plate and remove it on the IP on the passenger side and there is an allen head screw in the back (a mirror is handy) make sure you have a Pyro and turn it up only a little at a time.
Thanks... first i'm going to check what the egt reads pulling the trailer up hill. It's only a 22ft but i think that's safer to check that out first since it tends to boost it's highest pulling that load. Usually i'm lucky to see 7psi and that's almost at 3k rpm.
I'm used to turbo's on gas applications not diesels. Just to make sure i'm right... on diesels increasing the fuel increases egt's? On gas you usually more to drop egt's.
Also... is there anyway you can show me a pic of the cover/location? Hell even an underhood shot with an arrow to the general location would help.

hi beretz did you notice a big difference with the increased boost? Sounds like you got quite alot more psi . I have a Banks sidewinder on my truck. I dont have a boost guage or working pyrometer so i will have to get this sorted before i touch the truck lol.

this is a 6 year old thread, and he has not logged on in over 3 years, so don't hold your breath waiting for an answer from him.
ok i didnt see that , just saw the last few posts were new . will do some searching to try to figure out why my pyrometer isnt working then go from there. most of my problems seem to stem from the fact this was origonally a petrol truck.
Just an update... I finally got things adjusted. Now, with pulling 22ft camper/trailer, she'll hit 10psi and hold that. Egt's climbed slowly up to 950-1000 but never over 1000F. That's pulling up a 6 mile long hill doing 55ish with the truck floored. I figure that's about the best I can get so i'm leaving her alone. What do you guys think?
Where is the thermocouple for your pyrometer located?
A lot of the Banks kits had it after the turbo, and 1000 degrees after the turbo may be a little hot.
1250 pre turbo is max.
Turbos on average soak up about 300 degrees.
So the post turbo max temp should be 950 on average.
The pistons are the first thing that will melt.
This is why I like the thermocouple in the exhaust manifold.
No adding or subtracting or averaging anything, just keep the pyrometer under 1250 and drop that max temp back a bit farther on a very long pull.
Oil jets do cool the pistons, but you are putting a lot of heat in the oil when you spray it on 1200 degree pistons.
