62 drivers side door lock

It has been over a year since I have needed to lock up my '62. I needed to today and the drivers side door lock won't engage when I push the handle forward.

What could be causing the issue.

It sounds to me like your door lock internals at the back edge of the door are a bit gummed up. Can you lock it with the key from the outside or same story?

The Door Inside Handle itself connects to the Door Latch Remote Control, which sounds fancy but it is really just a pivot that the door handle connects to with a flat bar coming off of it. The flat bar in turn connects to the Door Latch Assembly directly. The entire Door Latch is one assembly.

Not a whole lot that can go wrong with the Remote Control mechanism since it is so simple. I'd suspect the Door Latch. They can get gummed up with dirt and old grease and start to not work quite the same. Should be fairly easy to pull off and clean the assembly and see if you can get it working correctly. Once it is clean some fresh lithium grease can keep it working smoothly for quite some time, usually.

My 2 cents.

Thanks.

There is no key access on a 62 on the driver side. Only on the passenger side.

The inside hand does push forward. It just will not engage the lock. The truck sits 90% of the time in one of my garages. I mostly just take it to local shows.

I'll try cleaning the latch area to see if that solves the problem.

Here's a few pictures to help describe how it works. First is the two parts that do all the work. On the left is the remote control pivot that the inner door handle attaches to (splines are facing down on the table here) with its flat bar running to the door latch on the right side of this first picture. The big lever pointing straight up is the main release lever that is operated when you push the outside door handle button. When you lock the door all it is doing is keeping this main release lever from moving which causes the button to not be able to be pushed in to open the door.

Then a close up of the unlocked door latch. Notice the sort of quarter moon shaped end of the lever in the lower right of this second picture. It has a hole in it that is where the small rod from the back of the lock cylinder (not seen here) connects to, if you have a lock, which you stated you do not on the drivers side. No worries. No rod would connect there on yours.

Note also the position of the shiny silver rod in this picture and the lever directly above it.

Final picture is of the door latch in the locked position. As you push the handle forward to lock, it pushes the flat bar backward, which rotates the lever above the shiny silver rod and pushes that silver rod down, which rotates the quarter moon ended lever into the way of the bottom end of the main release lever that goes to the outside button.

Opposite happens when you pull the inner door handle back. The flat bar is pulled forward and it rotates the lever that pulls the silver rod up far enough to first unlock, and if you keep pulling, unlatch the door.

That's pretty much it if you don't have an outside lock cylinder and key to contend with.

The outside door handle button is not directly linked to the inner latch, the button just has a stem sticking inside that pushes against the main release lever, but no connection holding them together.

Thanks TA455, my drivers side door won't open. It's locked and I can't unlock it with the key or the internal handle. I came on to the forum hoping someone may be able to help with a diagram (thanks Bill), but you've gone above and beyond!

I'm hoping the above images will help when I get a chance to look at this on the weekend. It's going to be a little difficult to access given the door is locked shut.

Really stupid question, but which way should I be turning the key to unlock the door - clockwise or counter-clockwise (truck is new to me)?

On my trucks - to lock the drivers door I rotate the key counterclockwise and, of course, clockwise to unlock.
