Cleaning under the hood

What do you all use to clean up the engine bay? I am looking to detail clean the engine for cosmetics. Need some suggestions.

Thanks - P

On a cold engine I squirt it all down with Purple Power. Don't let it dry. Do 2 coats.
Then I hit it with regular pressure hose.
Then I blow dry with compressed air.
Finish it all off with spraying everything with Heavy Duty Silicone Spray.
Show room shine complete.

Great topic, thanks for bringing this up; I've owned my truck for only about four months and I did one pressure wash (using Gunk engine cleaner and my pressure washed), but chickened out on really blasting the engine clean. I covered the intake and air filter housing, avoided the batteries and fuel filter housing. For you guys who know this and have the experience with pressure washing the 6.0L engine, can you please weigh in? Me personally I want to know if you can really blast the top of the engine (the valley) cleaning around the oil and egr coolers, turbo, and other components without damaging anything or penetrating water into forbidden zones... THX

I spray simple green on a towel and start wiping it down. I've tried lightly rinsing it down and the very first time didn't end well.
For about 3 months after the rinse, while stopped at a traffic light, it would feel like I got hit from behind hard enough to inch me forward. Problem ended up being the ICP connector, I'm not sure if it just had moisture or wasn't fully seated. I lifted it and blew it out, then reseated it and it has ran flawless since.
I have heard a lot of people just rinse them though.

The only time water has seen under my hood is during a flushing process , I know things are moisture resistant in some aspect but not for pressure , as I see it , too many Electrical components like , PCM, FICM, Alternator's, maybe if you took the time to completely cover those Idem's you may be ok , I just try to wipe things down when needed and lightly spray if a heavy job. Good luck.

I agree with Scott^^^on these 6.0 the less water the better imo, unlike on my 7.3 I pressure wash yearly after covering all vitals

The 6.0L is very picky about what you spray at it under the hood.
If you have placed dielectric grease on every plug under the hood
you "MIGHT" get away with a light rinse with a hose. Avoid all
connectors,PCM and the alternator. When cleaning I use Precision
Cleaner From Simple Green. It is not as unfriendly to aluminum as
the green Simple Green and is Boeing approved for use on aircraft.
It seems to work so much better that the green stuff and does not
take much to do the job. It also works well in the wipe on wipe off
mode of cleaning. One under hood cleaning step I take is to pull the
batteries one at a time if I want to not reset the KAM and spray with
the neutralizer indicator spray on the trays and the batteries and give
then a light scrubbing with a towel. Then rinse all foam away and
reapply to make sure that it not still turning red and telling that there
is still some acid to neutralize.

One very good thing to do is keep all water away from the FICM just in case.

Thanks for responses guys. Sean your absolutely right, that's why I asked the question. I figured our trucks were finicky and a basic spray and wash with a pressure washer was not wise.

Purple Power will remove grease and grime without scrubbing... spray, rinse with hose and repeat if needed and as mentioned by 87crewdually, don't let it dry.
Won't hurt the stickers either or the plastic. I use it on everything, like hotsauce.

Does not need anything other than spray is on. Also have not seen any problem with plastics or stickers.
And like I have said SAFE FOR ALUMINUM.
Not sure is the Purple Power is or not

The battery stuff does need a little hand work to do the best job.

Well, the good thing about your thread here Preston, is that you asked the question that I knew the answer was somewhere here... But all I remembered was NOT to use Simple Green -- which I had in the past and my aluminum looked like crap after.

So I stopped cleaning the engine off (wrong answer) because I didn't ask our friends here what I should be using...

Moral of the story is that there IS no stupid question, other than the one that goes un-asked...

Thanks for bringing it up, Preston, and you guys for giving us some good products to try...

I was looking for a quick link. The bottle I posted does not last a long
time but is handy and the gallon jug is the best. But there there is the big one.
Simple Green Extreme Aircraft Precision Cleaner This link as a dealer location list under Purchase

55gal drum. That has to be a few $$$ and go a long way.

Oh any BTW the spray bottle I now have it in is just one
the the HD janitorial type. The cleaner did remove the
permeant marker I used to label it with. How is that for cleaning.
Even faster than rubbing alcohol with no rubbing. I was filling
the spray bottle and spilled some on it and it was just like damp
water paint and a spray of water. Almost all washer off.
