Factory Slotted Mags

So the other day I helped out a guy with a 77 F100 that was broken down on the side of the road. When I was looking at his truck I noticed that he had some nice slotted mags on it but the center caps made them look stock so I looked into it some more and found out that they were offered as an option from 77-81. Does anyone have any more information on these? How rare are they? He only uses his truck as a work truck on his property so I was going to offer to buy them from him. I believe they're 15x6 but they need new tires so I was wondering what anyone might suggest for a tire size for these wheels. I want to go with BF Goodrich Radial T/As but I'd like as much rubber on the pavement as possible so any advice is appreciated.

Are these what you saw on that truck? I see these stock rims periodically. I bought a set from a guy that had the truck sitting in a corn field. Paid $150. They shined right up. A new set is on eBay for $900.

They were exactly the Type 20 that NumberDummy posted. How rare are these? Are they worth picking up?

With the popularity of '70's truck restorations these days, I think the wheel manufacturers (Alcoa? Mickey Thompson? Are you listening?) are missing out on a huge market for slotted wheels. I would love to see 17" 8-lug nut slots on my truck, but, based on my research, no one makes such a wheel.

Seeing that these are 6 1/2" X 15" maybe something like 30 X 9.50 X15, like this B F Goodrich.

I really like those but my truck is at stock height and only 2WD so I think something like that might look a little odd. I'm looking for more of a performance look. I just don't know too much about tire sizing and all. I'd like a wider foot print but I know that might be hard with a not-so-wide rim.

US Mags is making slots that will fit half tons in 15 inch with several widths. I have a set myself I am waiting to put on with the new tires until I do an alignment. Very affordable and they use conical lug nuts. I had a set of vintage slots but could not find shank style lug nuts that would work without modifying the wheels.

American Racing makes 15" slots, too.

I had a set of AR mags that used the shank style lug nuts. You had to check them weekly to make sure they hadn't loosened up. About 1/3 of the time they had. Torque to specs or torqued w/ an impact it didn't matter. Passenger side front worked loose enough finally it broke 3 studs and ruined a hub. If I remember correctly I got almost $50 for scrap for the set.

FWIW the factory slotted mags for these trucks were a 15X6" wide wheel. They came with L78-15 tires mounted onto the wheels. That equates to about a 235/75/15 tire today. However the 30/9.50/15 tires will fit just fine as well. Also my dad had a 77 2wd f150 that he ran the factory 15x7 wagon wheels with 31/10.50/15 tires on. And although that was a bit to much rubber (at least on the front) for my taste, they fit with out as issue. However you really won't want to put a 31/10.50 on a wheel narrower then a 15x7. But the 30/9.50's should be just fine. Hope that helps to answer your question. As far as are they worth picking up. Only you can really answer that question. Just keep in mind that these wheels were most commonly found on the Freewheeling package and I think the Indy trucks. And we all know are common those trucks are.

Alex is correct, they're 6" wide, not 6½" like I said. I was going from memory...you think by now I would've learned that's a bad idea .
