Hi everyone. I inherited my father's 79 F100. It was originally a 302 automatic 2wd truck. We swapped the body onto a 77 F150 4wd powered by a 351M and C6 auto. The 351 is tired and worn out and I have the opportunity to get my hands on a 390 with 4 speed trans. My question is what all would it entail to swap in the 390 with 4 speed in place of the 351 and C6? I know I would have to swap in the pedals from a manual cab. Also the 4 speed has the small Transfer case versus the 205 I believe is on the C6. Will these transfer cases interchange? Thanks in advance. Any help is greatly appreciated.
First off, Welcome to the FTE
This is over my head, but there will be other's here that will help you through this.
Take pictures and post them when you can. We really like our pictures
Thanks for the welcome. I will get some pics up as soon as possible. Unfortunately I have to attend a funeral today so it may be tomorrow before I can get them posted.
When you say "small" transfer case, are you referring to the NP203? D21? Is it a full-time or part-time case? Married or divorced? What year?
I'd nab up the engine and trans (if the price is right) because you can always resell a 390 and a T-18 or NP435. If you have access to the vehicle it comes out of grab up the x-member, pedals, assorted brackets and bits for the clutch, driveshaft, and and shifter(s).
Tough to say whether it will "work" or not without knowing what equipment your working with.
Sometimes what appears to be a good deal isn't... I mean, a 390/NP would be cool but I would simply get a 400 or 460 because of the C6/NP205 combination.
The D21 is weak whereas an NP205 is nearly bomb-proof.... I have an NP435/NP205 swap planned for my current NP/D21 combo.
Thanks for the suggestions HIO. The only reason this was a consideration was because I could get the setup for the nice price of Free. My little brother is entertaining the idea of a fuel injected 460 swap into his 77 F150 and said if he did he would let me have the engine/trans to get Dads back up and on the road.
