Timing set

Everyone chime in with their opinion.

Sealed Power, EngineTech or Cloyes.

All about the same price.

I am definitely changing them.

A little slack

Some pretty significant wear marks on the crank gear

Also, Timing cover seal:

Timken, Duralast, or Victor Reinz

Same deal on the pricing.

Seal power and Timken. My vote both have been around forever.

Also the HD after market valve springs add to the wear of the timing chain set.

I'd replace the set since you have the cover off.

I'm using the comp cam double roller set. I don't know how it's holding up now with almost 20k on it, but anything over oem with nylon gear set has to be better.
But they all give a little once they get seated.

I vote Cloyes and Victor.
Everybody prolly has a cheap version and a "better" version. I always go with the Cloyes better version. You get what you pay for. Things may have changed since then but I remember prolly about 2006 Some magazine or company did a comparison on All the name brand timing chain sets. Cloyes came out on top. Most of the sets had timing marks not stamped exactly right. One was off by 4 degrees!
Buy a good set.....Made In U.S.A.

The Cloyes 9-3108 is a really good set, another good set no one as mentioned is the Ford Racing M-6268-A390. Both are good double roller sets. I've used Cloyes with good luck, but I like the Ford Racing because it has a little more adjust-ability.

Wouldn't I want to put on the new set as close to where these are as possible with #1 @ TDC?

If not, then why?

I only have a single keyway?

Are there cranks with multiple keyways or is this an adjustment feature?

This ain't no hot rod engine. It was/ is just a strong workhorse.

I don't want to put hi pro stuff in her. Just replace what she has with same quality. Maybe a little better.

You can get a thin metal sleeve to slide over the end of that crankshaft. takes care of that groove.

Sorry Early, you lost me here. Groove where?

I kinda need the groove in the crank for my keyway. I'm asking about the timing sets that have multiple keyway slots in the crank gear. 3,9 etc..,

My crank only has the single groove ( one keyway ) so are the multiple slots in the crank gear for more adjustability or are there cranks out there with multi keyways?

Crank will just have one key slot. The bottom timing gear will have 1, 3, or 9 depending on which set you bought. You adjust the the cam timing by setting the bottom gear up or back depending on if you want advance or retard your cam. Or set it up dot to dot for 0*.

I will have to look at the paperwork that came with the truck. I know it was rebuilt .030 over since that's what the pistons are stamped. I was told that it was built for low end torque but I thought FE's are built for that anyway?
