I have had my truck now for a couple years and recently I have been experiencing several issues that I would like your opinions on. Problems:
1. When the truck is cold (morning or afternoon), the transmission slips out of gear. If I do nothing and just continue rolling down the road, it will go back into gear usually within 3-5 seconds. It will continue to do this until the truck warms up.
When the truck warms up, it will no longer slip out of gear.
2. The truck occasionally slips from Drive into 2nd Gear while driving down the road. It will do this whether cold or warm. When I notice it has slipped into 2nd gear, I simply shift back into Drive and all is well until it slips into 2nd again. This is random and seems to happen a couple times every time I drive. It does seem that when I floor it or hit the brakes hard or hit a large speed bump, this tend to trigger the slippage into 2nd. I'm not sure if that is related or just coincidence.
I checked the tranny fluid after driving today and it is red and full.
I appreciate any opinions and/or suggestions you all may havve.
If the shift lever is moving down into 2nd, check the lever spring. In drive, you should have to pull the lever back to move it to 2nd. It should also lock securely into the park position. Years ago, Ford had a problem with these things popping out of park into reverse. If it moves when you hit the gas, check for a broken motor mount. Make sure the kickdown rod operates freely. As far as it slipping when cold, FMJ has it right.
