Driveline Jolt?

My boss has an '02 Ranger 4.0 4X4 with the 5R55E. She bought the truck recently with 64K on it. She is having a problem with what she thinks is the transmission.

The problem lies not in the shifting, or slipping or anything normal. I'll do my best to describe it to you. Taking off from a stop or a slow rolling stop, about 1/4 through first gear, there is shift, and not a shift to the next gear. It feels like a soft jolt, almost like the tranny moves around under the truck. It only occurs during in first gear. After the soft jolt, it continues in first, shifts to second as normal and continues normally. It doesn't happen if you are driving down the road, take your foot off the gas, and then get back in the throttle. There are no vibrations or anything outside of the norm at any other time besides the 1st gear thing.

Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking maybe the tranny mount, but since it's only in first gear, I don't think so. I think it's something internal inside the tranny. I will tell her to put it in 2 and see if the problem occurs.

Check the mnotor and transmission mounts. First gear has the most tourque (sans reverse) so I would not be surprised if it only happened in first. Also, check the tranny fluid to make certain it's full. Could be a hard shift from low tranny fluid. If it's low, it went somewhere, so I'd then look for the leak.

Do you think could be the infamous "driveline thunk" issue?

See: Lubing the Ranger Driveshaft SlipYoke

Otherwise, I would suspect a valve body problem.

The fluid level is fine, and the motor mounts seemed okay as well.

Rockledge, it very well could be infamous "driveline thunk." That totally slipped my mind. Her truck is a Super Cab 4X4, and right in the year range for that issue.

If the problem is still occuring from take-offs in 2, I'm going to think that it is the driveline thunk.

If it stops from take-offs in 2, I'm going to think it's the valvebody problem.

The jolt happens everytime you take off, everytime. Thinking about it again, it feels like a gentle "bend" almost, there isn't any clunk. You go 1/4 through 1st, it gently "bends", and continues on normally.

Motor mounts can look just fine and be shot. Have someone lput some load on the engine with the brakes on while you are looking at the engine.
